A Journey to Matecumbe

Have always loved this book, but mine had become too worn out. When I ordered this book from Amazon, it was specified that, due to its age, it wasn't in perfect condition. It arrived quickly and was in as good a condition as could be expected and was in much better condition than my old one.

An excellent read

This book is correctly described in another review as "Twain-esque." It is the closest read to Huck Finn I have ever found. While it lacks the overarching antislavery theme of Huck Finn, in other ways it is the superior book.

Set in 1869, the story is a first person narrative of David Burnie, a fourteen-year-old boy on the run from the Ku Klux Klan with his thirty-six-year-old uncle Jim and his uncle's friend and former servant Zeb. It is written in the humorous, satirical style of Twain, using the period southern vernacular. Unlike Huck Finn (published in 1884), controversial for the extensive use of the "N" word, this story (published in 1961) is more politically correct for today's reader. It presents the many minority characters in a positive and sensitive manner, while remaining true to the times.

Fleeing down the Mississippi from Kentucky to the Florida Key, Matecumbe, they encounter a variety of characters in the course of their adventure. A master of character development, Taylor delivers a literary fiction story as interesting for them as for the plot. Beyond being an adventure and comedy, this book is extensively researched historical fiction. The bibliography lists approximately 120 specific sources Taylor used. The information he gleaned provides the backdrop to the story settings and events.

How this American masterpiece can be out of print is beyond me. My original paperback copy was destroyed years ago by the multiple readings by myself and my family. Every few years I check it out of the library. If you can get your hands on a copy, I recommend this as an excellent read for YA through Adult.

The Florida Keys, treasure and the Seminoles

Taylor's books are well-researched historical fiction. His plots are generally captivating, his characters, believable, funny and unusual. The comparisons by some reviewers to Huck Finn and his friends are probably valid on some level. Journey to Matecumbe begins on the Mississippi River, involves a raft trip downstream to escape the KKK, and includes a number of amusing, colorful characters involved in unlikely situations. It's worth the price of admission, if only for an interesting read.
However, readers who wish to get some historical knowledge with their enjoyment will find the obscure, post-Civil War era Florida Keys portions also to their liking. Taylor obliges the historical fiction reader by also taking some of the characters through Seminole villages, swamps, and a trek along the land route from the Florida panhandle to Miami. The descriptions of the earliest origins of the KKK might also be accurate.
I'd recommend this book as a better than average historical fiction to rest on the bookshelf for a later re-reading.

Good read

I enjoyed this book as it's the first time I'm reading a romance story of an Indian writer. The plot has an interesting premise of illegitimacy. The hero, Abhay is also shown to have flaws but as with typical romance hero - he is an alpha male... Aggressive, single minded focus etc. however the author has made sure that his sensitive side shows, the way he defends Nidhi, respects her wishes etc. Nidhi is also not a typical doormat, she shows a lot of spunk, gives it back and is shown to be really good at her work. However her troubled past and family background affects her deeply. Their dialogs when they are sparring makes an interesting read. The only character I didn't like was the grandfather. Found him to be too much of a stuffed shirt, I am looking forward to read the other books by this author.

A very interesting novel with a unique story. Even though it sounds like the other contract marriage love stories, the story takes a different turn. The building of romance between the protagonists is portrayed well. This author's novels are emotionally rich!

the rheeeeemm mantra done as instructed with breathing technics ( which is part of the magic ) opens one life immeditly to all good. the response of others to one heart center is vastly enhanced .the more you chant RHEEEEEEMM the more the universe opens for you. ones energy level jumps immediately with motivation to get things going pictures and thought flows heavy all in the direction of good for ones self and other human man kind
Im 72 and this is one of the most enlightening things I hv ever experienced and would recommend to all who want change to a good life. it is easy to do no special times or places just do the deep slow breathing and chant the words of the beginning , it only been a couple days the change was immediately noticed and seems to enhance as you chant though out the day
I had a electric heater go bad . I needed it working . my usual being no motivation . but I had the motivation as I chanted in the morning. I got the heater out and began chanting while opening the heater and to my surprise what I needed to do came to me in clear pictures and thought's fixed the heater and now hv warm good heat. before I would hv gone to town and bought new one. I truly love this and thank the universe for sending to me. as others return to the beginning the more good will return to mankind I look forward to my new life of good for me and all mankind ART

Too little, too slim...too bad.

I was hoping for a little more from this book than a half-dozen bijas that are then said to be chanted for all manner of purposes.

As someone who using mantras almost daily in both my devotional practice, and my magical practice, I wanted to find a resource that would perhaps shed some new insight on mantras I perhaps didn't know, or new expanded uses for mantras that I did.

Perhaps this would be good for someone who has never before encountered mantras and wants to start working with them for purposes of manifestation, but even as a very basic primer I felt this was too broad, and too slim on meat-and-potatoes info. But if this was written for someone very new, and you're going to tell a rank novice that the same powerful bija (because bijas are indeed powerful) can both repel and attract, you probably want to go into a bit of lip-service on focus and intent.

I guess overall I feel that it just didn't work as a 101-resource, or as a more intermediate-advanced one. Bija are absolutely forces to be reckoned with, but in some ways they can be wrecking balls when all you need is a hammer. Someone new to the practice isn't given the sufficient info or resources to know how to aim them, or that in many cases a full mantra would likely be more effective for their needs.

I would recommend the words of Thomas Ashley Farrand (Namadeva) exponentially over this one. Spend slightly more and get info that is MUCH more practical and can effectively be put to use on the spot.

Many books have been written about the significance of our human body Chakras (the 7 key ones) and the importance of repetitive mantras that are focused on a particular situation or relationship. However, no book that I have read captures the application of the mantras to so many life situations as does this book. Padiyar takes his experiences in life along with his Indian heratage and ties them together in a unique history lesson and then applies it for all to understand. Its a wonderful approach to one of life's great magical mysteries. From AB

Inspiring and Fun Read

I really enjoyed reading this book. I found the story of Dr. Yonggi Cho to be very inspiring, as the author writes of Cho's life after the Korean War, how he was skeptical of Christianity, how he was healed of fatal TB, how he came to faith in Jesus, and how he started his church with nothing but faith. Yoido Full Gospel is now the largest church in the world. I also enjoyed the humor and Korean histroy woven throughout the book. This is an educational and enjoyable book for those interested in the life and teachings of Yonggi Cho.

It is an annointed book that will not leave you the same. You will be better for reading it. The title is really a misnomer in a way. It is the auto biography of the pastor of the largest church body in the world. When this book was printed in the 1970's, he had over 100,000 members. Now it is far beyond that. Check them out online, Pastor Paul (David) Yonggi Cho at the Yoido Full Gospel Church in Korea. At the time of the writing of the book he went by Paul Yonggi Cho, now he goes by David Yonggi Cho.

Emphases the Work of God's Holy Spirit

I read this book many years ago. It was very inspiring. It strongly emphasized the working of God's Holy Spirit. I would recommend this book to anybody. I would agree that the title is misleading it sounds like a self help book. What it is a help from God book.
