The Only Game in Town

If you are searching for something to help you understand the world of curriculum development in vocational technical education, there is really no other choice than Crunkilton and Finch's fifth edition. These authors have defined the field for over twenty years.

Curriculum development is really different in vocational technical education. The instructional delivery method often requires that substantial time expires between introducing a topic and completing its study. It may require four years before a student is fully competent in preparing dinner entrees or troubleshooting an internal combustion engine. Classroom settings are simply one of a number of different ways that career and technical educators get their points across. Hence, curriculum planning is vital in the field.

Crunkilton and Finch explore the CTE Curriculum in four sections: perspective, planning, defining content, and implementing. Sections are well thought out and explained. There are areas of weakness, owing to the publication date. As an example, such topics as national program standards and 'all aspects of the industry' are either not mentioned or given transitory treatments since they were emerging issues in the late nineties.

In summary, Curriculum Development in Vocational and Technical Education does the basics of curriculum planning very well. Like all books, its value is diminished somewhat by time, but application of additional timely references can overcome that shortcoming. I recommend it highly.

Of all the curriculum books I have used and examined this is by far the best book out there. In discussions with vocational educators around the world, I have found this book to be one of the most highly regarded informational sources on curriculum development. A great resource tool for all educators, a must have for vocational educators.

Top Notch information for Curriculum Development

I have taken several classes on curriculum development of my 12 years of teaching, but none of them, till now, used this book. This book provides a large quantity of information in a compressed amount of space. This book is very useful for amateurs and experts, alike. It steers you in the right direction to be able to great high quality, efficient, and useful curriculum. This book doesn't beat around the bush, it gets right to the point.

I would recommend this book to anyone attempting to write or rewrite curriculum.

An Engaging But Belabored Theme

Professor Smith has written an engaging account of how and why philosophy, both as a concept and as practiced (professionally or otherwise), encompasses both more and less than commonly understood. The encouraging thought one takes away from his musings is that all of us, in one fashion or another, might well from time to time be engaged in philosophy, i.e., such ruminations are not restricted to those schooled in the discipline. A minor cavil: the Professor is a bit prone to displaying his elevated vocabulary, with a tendency to repeat (where were his editors?) certain favorites, e.g., plaidoyer, agentive. Mr. Smith Goes to Paris

Sometimes political correctness is a path to the truth. This is a very PC effort. It features in women, POC, African Catholic priests, Muslims, Hindus, expat philosophers-for-hire. This is fun. The author is erudite and it's interesting to see how the research, reading and interests of another differ, and sometimes differ markedly, from one's own philosophic interests. This is fun too. The author wears his erudition lightly, perhaps too lightly. One reads philosophy to get at the root of things via insights that can be appropriated and put to work. There was less of this than I had hoped for, but that is more often the case than not with contemporary books about philosophy, so I don't want to be too unappreciative of Prof Smith, who allows his sense of humor to peek through the prose frequently and entertainingly, thus keeping one reading on this still-vital subject. The book spends a fair amount of time on the well-known past and present fault lines of philosophy. Maybe this is inevitable for a historian of philosophy, which the author says he is. He cites Montaigne frequently, but, until the last section where he hires out as a philosopher-by-the-hour whose office is Parisian sidewalk cafes, he doesn't rise to Montaigne's level of "philosophy." Nonetheless, his sidewalk philosophizing is a lovely, even courageous, idea. It is too bad this was not developed with more of a novelist's eye, but that's asking for something the author never intended, even if he did lapse into fictional writing at many points in the book. In the popular imagination, if such a thing exists, philosophy continues its melancholy, long withdrawing roar. Could the Professor have done more to arrest this tend? You won't know unless you read the book.

if it was not require for my class I would not read it. As it is it is a waste of time and money.

Superfluous to the point of being obtuse. Reading this book is an exercise in patience so extreme one may lose their sanity prior to its completion. Dunning is overbearing in his opinions saying you must consider this or that and do things his way. Perhaps if he were more succinct and clear one might be able to find his way, but I believe he is hiding a lack of understanding through exhaustive verbosity.

Grade 1–4—Much surface and little substance mark this collaboration from Gosline and Bossi—but oh, what a beautiful surface it is. As the rhyming text extols the virtues of trees and describes the planting and growth of a group of seeds, the jewel-toned illustrations of the natural world immediately draw the eye. The elevated language tends more to poetry than sense: "Warm wishes sowed the greening land/and flocking birds rejoiced the stand/and sang a story that uplifts,/the tale of ten trees' simple gifts." The text then introduces these trees, each chosen to represent a particular characteristic (seemingly at random, for the afterword describing the various species gives no hint as to why they were assigned their titles). The blue spruce represents tolerance, the yellow poplar stands for love, and so on. A listing of state trees is appended. This has quickly become my favorite book. THe story almost brings me to tears and the illustrations are wonderful. I want the illustrations for my walls. It is nice to find a book that you can read over and over, but also feels great to give as a gift to everyone on your list. THis is a must have!

Substance, eloquence and utterly magical beauty

This book caught my eye at a pediatric center last year, and I recently succeeded in tracking it down. What an amazing find!

Fist of all the illustration is exquisite, magically emulating the purity and joy inherent in young children. Images are soothing and uplifting, as is the message. The first line in the book, "Everything good begins with me" is a compelling symbol for all that follows. In fact, contrary to what one reviewer wrote, this book is rich with substance and meaning.

What greater message can we hope to instill within our children than "everything good begins with me"? This is the vital yet seldom exemplified, grown-up concept of "accountability", bundled into a simple phrase any child can understand. While the imagery captivates, related messages of courage, hope, honesty, love, and gratitude effortlessly filter into the reader's consciousness.

I'm ecstatic to have discovered this book and to share its beauty and eloquence with my children. In fact I purchased additional copies for friends, family and teachers. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on this book. It's one you'll want to treasure and pass on for generations.

Be happy....plant a tree

The opening line is perfect, "Everything good begins with me." A tiny acorn tumbles to the ground and issues this statement to its mother tree. Then his adventure begins. He snuggles deep into a cloak of golden leaves, takes a long winter's nap and emerges in the warm Springtime wide awake, ready to sprout and stand tall amidst his prestigious elders.

Beautiful illustrations of different types of trees appear in the following pages and each one gives an account of his value, worth and contributions to his surrounding world. The trees are characterized by words such as hope, love, courage, gratitude, peace, compassion, tolerance, generosity, honesty, and happiness. They model to the human reader the exact attributes humans need to make their world a more loving and better place to inhabit. The world will then be a thriving and healthy community with everyone and everything living together in harmony and peace and doing their share to make the planet the best it can be.

The book is written in rhyme and the message is positive and inspirational. The illustrations are magical and bring the text alive. The journey from a tiny seed to a luscious, thriving forest encourages us to look after our world so our children can stand in the midst of "life" and know as they grow up they will need to become good stewards of their earth, as one day they will be passing it on to their children's and their children's children.......and so goes forth the circle of life with everyone having a part to play to keep it going.

EVIDENCE AND PAUL'S JOURNEYS is an in-depth survey of the historical evidence surrounding the travels of the Apostle Paul. Written by Jefferson White, an independent scholar, this short book is a detailed, yet accessible, examination of that evidence. Until now, the only books available for the non-scholar were surveys dealing with questions of evidence in a summary fashion. For the first time, the historical evidence is dealt with in depth, and in a way that the general reader will find useful.

From the Author
My purpose in writing this book was to get beyond the usual arguments about the evidence, and simply present the evidence as such. My aim was to avoid the irrelevance of much of modern biblical scholarship, which is more about unsubstantiated theories than about evidence. At the same time, I wanted to use the best of that scholarship to discover what can be known about the historical reliability of Luke's account of Paul's travels.

Quite frankly, the more deeply I studied the matter, the more surprised I was at the sheer amount of evidence that exists in relation to the biblical record. Most of that evidence pertains to small details. But since there are so many details that can be verified, and since Luke had to have a first hand knowledge of those details in order to accurately record them, the cumulative effect is impressive.

As I wrote at the conclusion of the book: "The Acts account of Paul’s journeys is as reliable as we may expect history to be. So far as it can be tested by objective evidence, Acts has proven to be an astonishingly accurate record of events."

Well written and thoroughly scholarly without being pretentious

I highly recommend the practical research presented in this book. As a software engineer and structured thinker, I appreciated the well-written and straightforward presentation. As a student of the Bible, teacher, and writer, I thought the book does an excellent job of walking the line of responsible scholarship and practical accessibility. I felt like I was reading a kindred spirit. If more teachers and preachers were so intentional to apply their study to communication like this, I suspect churches would be well served.

Jefferson White is to be commended for this work.

I liked the book, and it is an easy and quick read. Most any biblical college student would benefit from the material so clearly explained by Mr. White. He has done a fine job of researching the travels of the Apostle Paul, and the information is very accurate based upon his sources. I think this fills a vacuum that verifies and confirms the journey as recorded by Luke. I always appreciate corroborating evidence that the Bible is historically accurate. This work is more than just complimentary, but it shows that the events recorded by Luke are all entirely plausible.

Too weak in many areas.

If you are primarily interested in upholstery and drapery fabric this is a good introduction. It is weak on fabric for clothing--both fashion designs and especially popular designs. It seems these books ignore the working and middle class history. Additionally, it short-changed contemporary textiles. It missed the opportunity to give more discussion on technological and chemical innovations on textiles and the impact the revival of crafts and needlework art have had on the revival of some fibers.

Generally good technical information. A bit of emphasis on "older style" electromechanical relays used for power system protection, but the principles are universal, and still apply to modern numerical relays. A very good choice for anyone who works "in the field."

This book began in a bar, in downtown Memphis. I took a job there, thirty years ago, and was told the story about the first Piggly Wiggly store. Where I worked was the site of the original store. That fact motivated me to study Memphis history.� I earned a MA at Memphis State University, and my thesis was this biography of Clarence Saunders. I assumed then a publishing deal was imminent, but that did not happen. Eventually I moved� to other interests, particularly the life of Elvis Presley. I have had some success but always with the nagging thought, the Saunders book should be published.
�� I discovered History Press a few months ago. This relatively new publishing company offers trade paperback books on� a variety of local history subjects. I was happy they saw promise in my work. I edited my� biography for clarity and length, leaving the essential story intact. I selected over 60 images which help tell the story.
�� His story deserved to be told. If you are a Memphian, you may be familiar with Saunders. Years ago many people told stories about his forceful personality, his odd sense of humor, and his lavish spending habits. Two cultural institutions of the city, the Pink Palace Museum (the city's first museum) and the Lichterman Nature Center were his properties at one time. Inside the Pink Palace is a replica of the Piggly Wiggly store. Because he failed to keep his fortunes, we have these institutions today.
�� Saunders was, at one time, well known beyond Memphis. He had a lengthy obituary in the New York Times. His creative work with the Piggly Wiggly design and marketing brought national attention to a new concept in the 1920's, serve yourself at the grocery store. He was a pioneer in the supermarket business. The concept of self-service is now used world wide, in small convenience stores to the "big box" retailers. He predicted that self-service could be used to sell a variety of goods.� All those retail entrepreneurs owe a debt to his early success.
� Saunders' story is a story of "what if." What if he had not lost his first business idea and fortune in 1923. Would he be considered as prominent as his contemporary Henry Ford, who brought the automobile to the mass market? Would he be as prominent as Sam Walton, who in later years created the largest retail business in the world based upon a design of self service? We will never know. Sadly, his fame did diminish. A generation after I began my own research, and virtually everyone who actually knew Saunders has passed on. Today I hope my own work will bring attention to Clarence Saunders again.

About the Author
For over thirty years, Mike Freeman has made a career out of his love for Memphis and regional history. He co-wrote, with Cindy Hazen, two books about Elvis Presley--The Best of Elvis in 1992 and Memphis Elvis Style in 1997--and a book based upon Patsy Cline's letters, Love
Always Patsy, Patsy Cline's Letters to a Friend, in 1999. For eight years he owned and lived in the first home Elvis purchased at 1034 Audubon Drive in Memphis. Mike has also written or co-written magazine articles about the area's fascinating personalities. In 2007, Mike helped create three DVDs: Elvis' Memphis and Beyond Elvis' Memphis with Artsmagic, Inc. (UK) and Elvis: Return to Tupelo with Michael Rose Productions. With his partner, Sue Mack, Mike continues to do research today and offers guided tours of the region. This biography of Clarence Saunders was actually his first project and his MA thesis. Until now, only excerpts of this work were published in the Tennessee Historical Quarterly (1992) and Tennessee Encyclopedia (1997).

An Inspiring and Interesting Character

Clarence Saunders was a remarkable man. Well-written and comfortable in its scope, this book takes you through his life and paints an adequately vivid picture of this gruff human who captures the core motive in each of our steps towards success. His life was fantastic. I love this man and have acquired him into me in the course of reading about him.
