Good book on the French Navy from the a Royal Navy prospective.

The author writes about being unbiased and gives us his biased opinion. To me, he writes like a victorious British author. As he writes about the French Navy. He does mention Admiral Suffren, but not as a top flight admiral, seems to me he pushes him into the "dust bin" of history. Although, Mr. Jenkins does think he was good, but not the best.

A Worthwhile Introduction

The principal merit of this book, published in 1972, is that it is still the only single-volume history of the French Navy in English. It is somewhere between a work of academic research and a popular history: it is apparently well researched but does not detail its sources and frequently expresses its author’s quite strong personal judgements on the personality and conduct of various naval officers that it describes.

After a short introductory chapter on the French Navy before Richelieu, the book concentrates on 17th and 18th centuries, with almost 200 pages (over half the book) on the period 1624 to 1789, about 80 pages on the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars and only 60 pages on the century and a half 1815 - 1972, including two World Wars. Although it could be argued that the French Navy was a more important instrument of national policy between 1690 and 1780 than at any later time, this focus probably reflects the author’s interest in the earlier period.

The author, E H Jenkins, was a junior naval officer in the First World War and later a history teacher who wrote it in his retirement. This may explain some of its features: its writing style is old fashioned, sometimes quaint, not surprising as it was written by someone born in 1897 when in their 70s. Its concentration on famous seamen and major battles rather than technology or political grand strategy seems more like 19th than 21st century historical writing.

However, these issues aside, the book does what it sets out to do well. It contains a readable and detailed (but not excessively detailed) account of the development of the French Navy in the early 17th century and its later use in France’s wars of aggressive expansion, with less emphasis on the post-1815 period when it was not used in this way. It gives this account from the French viewpoint, to balance the vast body of works centred on the British Navy. Although a small number of books have appeared in English since 1972 on aspects of the French Navy in the last 375 years, this is still the only one covering the whole period.

moderate in control application, good for practical application

The book does cover some detail aspect of magnetic modeling, but some details are not covered such as the rotational transformation between stator to rotor coordination. The model built is suitable for low-order controller design and could be improved if higher order with state space representation is included for more design of non-linear controller algorithm.

However, the practical aspect of the materials is good such as the electronics,controller and application examples.

Beware! You will start stalking the author for a sequel if you read this series!!!

Well, first of all let me just say that after reading LID, I was extremely anxious for the sequel!! I mean we were left with a pretty epic cliffhanger afterall! Love is Fear is a worthy sequel that stands up to the first book. I read it in pretty much one sitting minus picking children up from school and feeding them. I guess they do need fed don't they? It seems series that are much loved end up in an injustice by the author with the subsequent books in the series, but Caroline Hanson has done her story proud. Most would however say that an injustice has been done to the characters. Well, not really but it's not all unicorns and cupcakes that's for sure. Val has some tough choices to make, and even more tough choices to make. She forces herself into some decisions that she thinks is best for her..ahem Jack. Well, let me just say that I really liked him in the first book but that was because there was quite a bit of unknown still about him. Yeah, well he pretty much ruined me from ever being team Jack. I won't say why, except that it truly has nothing to do with his choice at the end. My mind was made up way before that and I can understand his draw to the choices that he makes. That is something though that Val is definetely not going to be ok with though, it contradicts everything she's ever believed..ahem..wanted to believe about him.

That brings us to....LUCAS. Oh.my. I was team Lucas from book one! I still am, even though by the ending of LIF you are left with a lot of questions about his true character. Val's having a tough time giving up the dream of a normal life, so much so that she has a hard time truly facing her feelings for him, and even more so believing what feelings he may really have, or not have for her. I being uncharacteristically optimistic want to believe that depsite all popular beliefs otherwise he is capable of actual emotions, specifically love. He says he can't, Val has to try to convince herself that she can love him and live with him even if he cannot. She decides to see if she can take what he can offer her and live with it, while constantly questioning whether she is making a huge mistake. At one point she talks about people's actions meaning more then their words...I wish she would open her eyes/mind a little more when a certain character begins to wreak havoc on all their lives..

Which brings us to Cerdwellyn..the Fey King. I prefer to think of him as a Trickster, because that's pretty much what he is. You never have the indication of whether he is good or evil. His actions are motivated for sure, but one thing is certain he and Lucas are mortal enemies. We learn more about their histories but how much of it is true, and which side was wronged more? Considering Cerdwellyn has been betrayed and forced to flee underground to the Fey kingdom with no way out, he pretty much has it out for Lucas's blood and would do anything to make him suffer and what a better way then Val. It will be interesting in the sequel to see what his true intentions for Val will be...since we are yet again left with a monster cliffhanger..hehehe..literally pretty much. Well the cliff part that is...

I enjoyed the character growth in this book, we learn a lot more about who they are and are left with just as many questions I hope we get more answers to in the next installment...I am going officially on record in stating that I am STILL team LUCAS!

Love is Insecure

I'll start by saying that this book is well worth the read, especially after the cliffhanger left from Love is Darkness, however I disappointingly did not enjoy it nearly as much. That enjoyment does not have anything to do with the events that take place or the plot that unfolds, but rather goes back to Valerie and my disappointment in her. The actions, indecision, and second guessing, combined with some rather surprising turn of events, solidly classify this series as a paranormal soap opera and not the kickbutt urban fantasy I was hoping it would become. So not to provide spoilers, I'll keep this synopsis light and focus more on the things that worked really well vs. the things that are starting to annoy me.

Valerie Dearborn is the last known empath in this world or any other. After her mother was murdered by a vampire and they rescue a boy Jack who's lost his parents to a vampire, she ended up losing her childhood dreams to her father's and Jack's obsession with revenge. Because of her empathic abilities, the tortured and obsessed motives are crippling for her, and she craves a normal existence. Only her love for Jack and her deep attraction to Lucas, the vampire king, who needs Valerie's help to bring back otherworldly creatures to balance out the evil of the vampires, make it difficult for Valerie to walk away and leaves her in a strange love triangle where she's not sure what she should do. So instead of thinking things through and trying to figure out who she really is as an empath, and what she wants, she jumps head first into trying just about anything that ultimately leads her to the world of the Fey and the attentions of the Fey king.

The history of the Fey is really interesting and keeps you intrigued on where the story is going and just what Valerie's role is in all of that. Her series of, for lack of a better word, experiments, should have helped her flush out what felt right and what felt wrong, I mean she is an empath right? In the end, she's as clueless as she's ever been and instead of being left with two ambiguous men in her life, she's left with three.

This book is no filler and there's lots of sex this go around, along with some surprising revelations, but I find myself feeling the same things I felt back in the first book. With a second installment, I'm riding dangerously close to not caring for any of the characters and when you don't have someone you're rooting for, it's an easy way to lose interest altogether. Rachel's role in this book is nothing short of obnoxious and I had to roll my eyes at one point where she's monologuing about how she's never killed anyone who wasn't truly evil.... hmmm she must have forgotten about gutting Valerie like a fish in the first book, that or it doesn't count because she didn't die. I guess intent doesn't matter in this case. Regardless, it was an annoying distraction to create more drama and felt over manipulated. The titles of the books imply that Valerie is exploring what love is, and clearly she's yet to find it, but I was rather hoping she could at least try finding it with herself. I felt Valerie's turmoil in the first book, but this go around, she doesn't even try to go for normal. Instead she walks in, eyes wide open, and everything turns into regrets and misplaced indignation.

A little torn

I can't think of how to write this review so that a potential reader would find it helpful. The first book left me excited and anticipating the sequel, this book left me sad. Not in a "this is a really bad book, it let me down" kind of way, but as in I actually felt bad for the characters. At the end of the first book I couldn't wait to see how Jack would react. The end of this book left me a little torn. I know this is going to be a series, so there will be more to the story, but it seemed a little final to me. Overall, was it worth the wait? Yes. I just have to rate LIF a little lower than my first review because it didn't leave me feeling the same way I did after LID.
