This is about one man, an Austrian musicologist called Franz Ritter, who is currently ill with an unspecified disease, who throws away the tablets his doctor gives him and lies awake at night, thinking about various things. These include his unrequited love for the French woman Sarah, his wide-ranging knowledge and views on primarily Western classical music but also some Middle Eastern music and, above all, on matters relating to the Middle East and, in particular, the relationship between Europe and the Middle East. He himself has travelled extensively in the Middle East (though not as much as Sarah) and is very knowledgeable about the subject and about the various Westerners who travelled there and were influenced by that part of the world. He gives us a wide-ranging selection of often highly opinionated anecdotes on the topic, from the various European women who travelled and lived in the Middle East to those writers and musicians who were very much influenced by it, from Balzac, the first Western novelist to insert a piece of Arabic into his novels to composers such as Liszt and Bart�k whose music was influenced by the Middle East. He damns Wagner and praises Beethoven (not least because he left Germany, preferring to live in Vienna) and even receives a compass modelled on Beethoven s as a gift from Sarah, a compass which points not North but East. Above all it is a wonderful and learned recitation of the intellectual history of Europe and its association with the Middle East, told in a non-learned manner, as well as a discussion of music and musicology, as Ritter lies in bed in his flat in Vienna, listening to his neighbour, Herr Gruber, wandering around.

N� en 1972, Mathias Enard a �tudi� le persan et l'arabe et fait de longs s�jours au Moyen-Orient. Il vit � Barcelone depuis une quinzaine d'ann�es, interrompues en 2013 pour une r�sidence d'�criture � Berlin. Astoundingly deep, erudite and warm, a symphony of memory

Simply astounding in its depth, erudition, humor, heartache. A sleepless night, and the thoughts go round and round, as they do, here in the mind of Franz Ritter, orientaliste (specialist in Middle Eastern studies), musicologist, obsessed with and paralyzed by his love for Sarah, a colleague, a friend, a one-time lover, and every memory of their times together leads to another thought, another path of association, another layer of emotion, until memory becomes a symphony, an orchestra of predawn obsessions. One reads with the ear, and a smile. One sample sentence, from page 119, takes up an entire page, sent me to Larousse, to Wikipedia and to Youtube, is too long to include in this review. It starts with F�licien David's Desert symphony stuck in his head, is that a sign of insanity, David is forgotten but was adored in his time, his music captured the song of the desert better than anyone, he was holy and crazy in the fashion of all saint-simoniens but he was right about Algeria, the first to recognize Algerian culture as independent, but French politicians are twisted cowards, and it ended in the colonial mire of injustice and thievery. In Enard's maestro voice this is an adagio, a pattern that repeats through the book, through the remarkably knowledgeable mind of Franz Ritter. Poor Franz. Read it. See why, despite his vast knowledge, deep understanding and wide travels, the Vienna night brings no counsel. Hoping an English translation is in the works for anglophone readers.
I would also like to complain that the English description offered above is horrible, poorly written, a literal description of the book by someone who read the words, but did not hear the melody. Also Amazon has misspelled the title here on the review. Enard deserves better, Amazon!
