About the Author
Janet Horne received her Master of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Business Education from California State University, Long Beach and has spent her career teaching business and computer applications courses. The majority of her teaching career has been at Los Angeles Pierce College, where, in addition to being a full-time professor, she has also been the Computer Applications and Office Technologies Department Chairperson, served on many committees, and developed new programs. Janet has been a presenter at many educational meetings and seminars and involved with a variety of professional organizations.

Janet’s quest to find a textbook to use in teaching QuickBooks led her to write one of the first texts for QuickBooks. The text is designed for a semester-length course with the purpose of teaching students how to use QuickBooks in the business world. The text goes from simple to complex in transaction analysis and entry. QuickBooks 2015: A Complete Course is the sixteenth edition of the book. Other textbooks by Janet Horne include several editions of QuickBooks Pro: Simplified, QuickBooks Pro: An Introduction, Peachtree Complete Accounting, Getting Started with QuickBooks Pro, and Computerized Accounting with CA-Simply Accounting. He describes how he helped a friend commit suicide to shorten her struggle with terminal brain cancer. He also tells of his involvement in other cases of euthanasia, either as passive observer or as adviser to people who chose to end their lives and to their troubled families. These include a gay circus trapeze perfomer afflicted with AIDS; a quadriplegic frustrated in his quest for romantic love; and mystery writer Mary Bowen Hall, a victim of metastatic breast cancer. Shavelson's graphic photographs of his subjects at various stages of their ordeals add an unusually immediate dimension to this sensitive, helpful guide.

A great book on a difficult subject

This is a great book on a difficult subject. The author covers the topic from about every conceivable perspective, having sat bedside with people as a friend, relative, physician, and ethics consultant. It is written with great sensitivity, caring, and knowledge, and provides a full background of the history and the progress of death-with-dignity movements and laws. Long before California finally made physician aid-in-dying legislation a reality (June 2016), he outlined exactly how the law should and does work.

About the Author
John G. Taylor is Emeritus Professor and Director, Centre for Neural Networks, Kings College, University of London, and Guest Scientist, Institute of Medicine, Research Centre, Juelich, Germany. He has published more than four hundred papers in quantum field theory, elementary particle physics, string theory, neural networks, time series, pattern recognition, and cognitive neuroscience. He is also a prominent debunker of pseudoscience.

Misleading and Unorganized

This is the typical book created by putting together technical papers, proceedings, and working papers without a unifying structure.

This is a short list of this book's limitations:

1) Fragmented: every chapter is written by a different author.
2) Unorganized: Neural Networks are introduced only at chapter 11.
3) So badly planned that both chapter 11 and 18 have basically the same content. You can look inside the book yourself to see that.
4) Lack of examples: very few implementations of NN are provided or suggested.
5) Out of context: many chapters are not related to Neural Networks at all, for example chapter 16 is about Yield curve modelling, and chapter 21 is dedicated to Portfolio Optimization without any contextual reference to NN. Please be aware that after introducing these topics there is NO follow-up whatsoever with NN application examples.
6) Misleading: The content about Neural Networks is really minimal.

One drawback...

...shoddy binding.

Other than that, the book's great.

What I like about his writing is how relates the way your eye works to the way the carpets are designed and built. He yalks a lot about "centers" and about how a carpet can be that much more enjoyable when your eye can be drawn to sections which can be more-easily digested.

Great but not what you would expect

Christopher Alexander is known among architects and maybe even more among computer enthusiasts. If you are one of them (us) and know his other work, you would be surprised by this book.
It deals with carpets, specifically Turkish carpets.
A friend of mine lent me this book and I was fascinated. It has a certain passion for its subject and its interesting even if you don't know anything and don't care anything about carpets. Author explains about some items in his quite large collection of carpets and why he finds them not only rare and valuable as an antique but also beautiful.
The beauty of a carpet lies in its pattern and here we get to familiar grounds (as for example in his �A Pattern Language�). A pattern consists not only of the ornament but also of the negative space, the area remaining. He explains on examples from his collection. And one wanders if there is yet another application of his theory beside architecture per se, computer design and carpets.
Still its quite expensive, but if you happen to lay your hands on it, go ahead and enjoy.

a quick & humble impression

I got to take a look at this book in the UMASS non-circulating collection. It was beautiful, covered with a gold patterned cloth. Inside, the paper and reproductions of the carpets and art work were of the very best quality. I read the introduction and skimmed through the subsequent chapters. After my breif encounter with this book, I felt as though I had found the secret heart of Alexander's architectural theories. Somehow his passion for these carpets seemed to be the kernal from which his volumes have sprung.

Zeitoun: A Reflection On New Orleans and America

"Zeitoun" is an inspiring, tragic and powerful book that will endure decades from now about how America failed at helping New Orleans and the residents of the city during and after Hurricane Katrina. In a nonjudgmental and factual manner, the book recounts failed expectations and lack of accountability by FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security in response to the devastation brought to the city by Katrina.

Author Dave Eggers, one of the important storytellers of our time, chronicles the true story of one man - Abdulrahman Zeitoun - a prosperous Syrian-American and father of four who chose to stay through the storm to protect his house and contracting business.

Zeitoun risks his own life daily by paddling through the city in a canoe in his attempt to save lives and help provide food and water to others, only to endure shameful, unjust and unaccountable torture at the hands of police and the military. The lasting harm done to Zeitoun, his American wife Kathy and their children continues even today, four years after the storm.

Eggers documents that Homeland Security, FEMA and the military sent troops to New Orleans not necessarily to assist in rescues but rather because of an unfounded and paranoid belief that terrorists might take advantage of the hurricane situation to cause further disruption. In the perverted and racist government process, Zeitoun is viewed not as a savior of the city but as the enemy.

While I suspect that the story of Zeitoun will further enhance Dave Eggers' well-deserved destiny as a meaningful voice in American nonfiction writing, I am most struck by the fact that all proceeds and royalties are going to the not-for-profit Zeitoun Foundation in New Orleans.

Eyeopening--and frightening

Although I knew some bad things happened during the flooding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina—the murder of several innocent blacks by cops comes to mind—I never knew just how complete the breakdown of civil liberties was. Zeitoun is an account of that breakdown, and it presents a frightening portrayal of the Kafkaesque circumstance hundreds or thousands of ordinary, law-abiding citizens found themselves in—imprisoned for weeks without charges, without defense, not allowed even to contact loved ones to let them know what had happened to them. People being “disappeared” off the street or even from their own homes for no reason is something I associate with some third world dictatorship, not something that could happen here in America. Zeitoun is an eye-opener as to just how fragile the rule of law is in America, and how quickly our society can revert to brute authoritarianism.

A new perspective on a horrible tradegy.

This inside perspective was very fascinating to me after only hearing what the media provided publicly. My daughter was a senior at Tulane when Katrina hit and she evacuated home to Southeast Texas - then Ike hit. I understand PTSD first-hand. The middle-eastern culture stressing over their missing brother/cousin was very intense; as was Karen Zeitoun's stress leaving him behind and evacuating with their children. The character development was very good. The book is written with facts of the tragedy and note familiar locations in NOLA. I felt I was there....

About the Author

Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883-1950) was professor of economics at the University of Graz and at Bonn. He also served as Austrian minister of finance. He later moved to the United States where he taught at Harvard University until his death. His works include Business Cycles, History of Economic Analysis, and Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy.

Bruce A. McDaniel is professor of economics at the University of Northern Colorado. He is the author of several journal articles and Entrepreneurship and Innovation: An Economic Approach.
