By the end of the nineteenth century, race science and Orientalism reached a deep and lasting consensus in regard to India, which Trautmann calls "the racial theory of Indian civilization," and which he undermines with his powerful analysis of colonial ethnology in India. His work of reassessing British Orientalism and the Aryan idea will be of great interest to historians, anthropologists, and cultural critics.

The profound knowldge of the author on Indology and Indo-European studies made his argument authorative. This book is not interesting to read nor was it helpful in our instructor's class as she rarely used the book. In the beginning of the class, I did read through chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4, and completed notes as well as flash cards for study. I quickly learned that our tests and quizzes in class had very little to do with the material in this book. Again, this book is boring. The excerpts and examples throughout the book were distracting, equally boring, and unhelpful. I bought the ebook. Near the end of our semester I began using the search tool often to search keywords for any questions I had. That was likely the only benefit about my purchase. However, I do feel that my online searches were actually more helpful, more detailed, and undeniably more interesting than from the book. I cannot say this book will last long in my library following this class as a reference.

I'm still glad I bought it

I bought this for my Nursing Research course because it was a required textbook. This shipped to my house really quickly, and came in the exact condition as described. Although my professor didn't really require us to read this for the course, I'm still glad I bought it. It was a good price, and I still ended up reading it for supplemental information. It makes concepts really clear and is very easy to read.

Don't waste your money

Incredibly dissatisfied with this product... After purchasing the book for a college course, I later found weeks into the course that the paperback copy that I had purchased was misprinted. Now I am a college student stuck with an $82.49 stack of papers, as I cannot get the bottoms of most if not all pages in the book. As if classes weren't already hard enough, here I am with this for study material.

A college student's oppinion

I have only started on the first three chapters but so far the book is interesting, informative, and arrived to my house in top condition. This textbook is extreamly helpful in understanding how to take x-rays and when/why they are necessary. I've lent it to a friend who's a dental assistant, who just wanted to learn more about dentistry, and she said it was 'insightful'. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about dental radiography for themselves or for a class.

This is an intellectual book. I wish that the book spent more time on practical applications of promise theory. There are a number of examples throughout the book, but I found them insufficient to fully explore the ideas being presented.

A book that promises to change how you think in system design

There are two broad categories of technical books published by O'Reilly. The first and probably the most over represented focuses on getting engineers up and running with the latest "new thingy" aiming to change the landscape of software programming, design and operations. Docker/Containers. Microservices/Go. FP/Clojure/Scala/Haskell. Apache . These books are invaluable in improving how engineers accomplish a task within a particular domain with a particular technology. Then there are books like Mark's that look to change how we (should) actually think about problems, tackle designs and task solutions and not just in one domain or with one particular technology. This second category of O'Reilly books contains timeless gems, such as this one, offering real insight, sound reasoning and expert guidance that all engineers come to treasure, not because it helped resolved a pressing issue but because it transformed their thinking and in turn gave them the inspiration to design, develop, deploy and deliver much better managed systems with a high degree of confidence and understanding of the dynamics at play - big and small. Mark has a wonderfully natural way of communicating complex subjects in his talks and books that I've long coveted. This one is no exception. Distilling and sharing a deep and broad understanding of a technical subject, one that has been mulled over many years of research, seems to come so natural to Mark in his writings. This book does indeed live up to its title, somewhat rearranged, in PROMISING to change how to THINK in terms of SYSTEMS of COOPERATION.

Interesting, but...

This is certainly a unique way of thinking about connectivity and interaction, but if you're already familiar with enterprise architecture and good design principles, you already know a good portion of what this book aims to provide. I like the overall message of the book, and I liked the way promise interaction was described between agents, but I didn't like the vocabulary used throughout the book. The author consistently uses "big" words and complex sentences to describe simple topics, and I think a good portion of it is just hubris, completely unnecessary, and I felt it detracted from the overall reading experience.
