The Plumed Troop

This is a definitive work of the Britains Ltd production after WW II until the cessation of hollow-cast lead soldier production in 1966. Each set is listed and the book is profusely illustrated, and even though the pictures are in black and white it still brings out the magnificence of the castings, the honest, skillful painting, and recalls the joy of seeing these intricate models in their sets and red boxes under the Christmas tree.
If you collect Britains as I do you will find this book immensely helpful in catalogueing your collection and it also gives you the needed information on what to look for at shows, on ebay, or wherever else you choose to look.
This volume only covers the lead production, not the plastic. For that you need to go elsewhere. Opie's The Great Book of Britains is the best place to start in my opinion for the entire production range from 1893-1993.
Wallis' book, however, is smaller and a paperback, which makes it much handier and it is a ready reference for collecting. I have found it, and its companion volume, Armies of the World, to be indispensable for research, catalogueing, and for just reading up on the sets, the types of figures, band instruments, makeup and composition of sets, and the production dates of the sets. If you are a Britains addict, I mean collector, this book is a definite must have.

About the Author
ALPHONSE ALLAIS (1854 – 1905) began his career in Paris during the Belle Epoque. He was particularly active at the legendary cabaret Le Chat Noir, where he wrote for and edited the weekly paper. He quickly became known for his deadpan wit and inexhaustible imagination. Among other things, he also exhibited some of the first monochromatic pictures (such as his all-white “First Communion of Chlorotic Girls in the Snow” in 1883) and composed the first silent piece of music: “Funeral March for the Obsequies of a Deaf Man” (1884). Throughout most of his life, he contributed columns several times a week to LE JOURNAL and LE SOURIRE. These pieces were collected into twelve volumes, which he called his “Anthumous Works,” between 1892 and 1902. He also published a collection of his monochromes, ALBUM PRIMO-AVRILESQUE, in 1897, and a novel, L’AFFAIRE BLAIREAU, in 1899, as well as a few plays. His later years were troubled by debt, a bad marriage, and heavy drinking; he died at 59. He was a crucial influence on Alfred Jarry, as well as on the Surrealists: Breton included him in his ANTHOLOGY OF BLACK HUMOR, and Duchamp was reading him on the day he died. Allais’s fascination with wordplay, puns, and holorhymes led Oulipo to call him an “anticipatory plagiarist”; the Pataphysical College dubbed him their “Patacessor.” His books have remained in print in France, and the Acad�mie Alphonse Allais has awarded a literary prize in his honor since 1954.

About the Author
E. J. Hannan (1921 1994) was Professor of Statistics at the Australian National University in Canberra. He was a pioneer of modern time series analysis and winner of both the Pitman Medal and the Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal. The Australian Academy of Sciences commemorates his work by awarding the Hannan Medal every two years to recognise achievements of Australians in pure mathematics, applied and computational mathematics and statistical science.

Excellent Frequency Estimation Algorithm Presentation.

I was pleasantly surprised when i saw the title of this book for the first time; I couldn't even find an article dedicated explicitely to Frequency Tracking Algorithms, let alone a whole book! Specifically, i was looking for a reasonably good presentation of frequency detection algorithms to help me extract frequencies from voice signals. I am no programming wizzard, so i restrict myself to Matlab. This book gives a very strong and to the point intro and then it gives you the exact amount of mathematical explanation to understand each algorithm, what it can do, how it does it, and - maybe most importantly - its limitations. If you are working with Matlab, the programs given in an Appendix at the end are really helpfull. I recommend this book to anyone who is doing research involving Frequency Estimation. It is really one of a kind and i, for one, would like to see a second edition with more algorithms (and possibly more programs!).

The ONLY reference for Frequency Estimation and Tracking

Barry Quinn and Ted Hannan are statisticians with a longstanding interest in periodic signals.
As someone who has worked with Barry (although, unfortunately, not Ted), I think this book is worth the money. Barry is a statistician, so he "talks funny" from this engineer's viewpoint. However, the book starts off relatively easily in Chapter 1 and builds up to some very rigorous, but very applicable mathematics. While Barry is currently professor of statistics at UMIST in Manchester, he spent much time working in defence (with a 'c') research labs on sonar signal processing problems --- so he has worked on some of the toughest real-world* problems in signal processing.
* If that's applicable to the defence industry or the defense industry**.
** In my experience, the "real-world" is always somewhere where you ain't.

I am writing this review to counter the previous anonymous review, and as there does not appear to be an author's review page. Forgive me for giving 5 stars, but I would hardly have given it none! This book is meant for those interested in algorithms for frequency estimation, and the statistical behaviour/performance of these algorithms. It necessarily contains lots of nice equations, as these are needed to understand the problems and solutions properly. It is not meant to be bedtime reading. Seventeen pages of useful Matlab code would seem pretty generous to me - the book is not a Matlab Primer. My programs are also available from my web page.
These are corrected versions of the ones in the book (there were a few typos).

Teens love Ask Elizabeth!! (Ask my teens!!!)

I bought a copy of Ask Elizabeth to bring to school with me (I teach High School English) in case a student wanted to read it during their independent reading time, or borrow it over a weekend, etc. (I always liked Elizabeth Berkley-- grew up watching Saved by the Bell--- so this was a no-brainer purchase for me.)

Well, as soon as one girl got her hands on the book, several others asked if I had more copies. What? Why? It turns out, the issues in the book are issues that the girls WANT to talk about but really are too self-aware to bring up to anyone--- even parents! To solve the problem for the time being, the girls are using the book in a book club on Fridays-- reading a selection together and using it to spark an honest conversation (which is the goal of book clubs anyhow!)

Obviously, I will now have to order at least a couple more copies of the book.

One more note: I don't know how they (the publishers) did this, but the book is GORGEOUS, full of bright colors and pictures / illustrations EVERYWHERE--- and yet the price (both cover price AND amazon price) is so so affordable. So if your teen is reluctant to read typical books--- this may be the answer--- it LOOKS appealing and IS appealing!

I can't recommend this book enough. If you are a parent, grandparent, teacher, uncle, aunt, ... friend even, get the book for a teenager in your life. They will THANK YOU FOR IT, believe me, it is terrific.

My 16 year old daughter said this was the best book she has ever read. She got the book last week and would not put it down. Elizabeth Berkley has an amazing way of reaching out to teens. Bravo!

1) To my surprise I even learned something from the book that I put in practice! I sat her mother down (we were at sever odds) and talked to her the way the book suggested, and it has blessed the relationship in so many ways! It's turned our entire interactions around for the better, and made making arrangements and time with my daughter PLEASURABLE and a TEAM EFFORT!

2) The first time my daughter told me she used the book to help her with mean kids at school... and that she keeps a poem from the book in her cell phone to use as inspiration... AND asked me if we could buy another copy for her best friend... to find out the book has also blessed her life in such a short time... I knew buying the book was worth 10 times more than I paid for it!

An annual essential for me.

I've used this for years to track the void-of-course moon. You don't want to start anything new during the VOC moon, and purchases made during that time rarely work out for you as planned. The VOC happens for a few minutes to seveeral hours between when the moon makes its last major contact with another planet until it goes into the next sign. During this time it's best to just hang loose, kick back and take things easy.

And of course, it's excellent for looking up other astrological goings-on -- the phase of the moon, new moon, retrogrades, etc., etc. Nice little day planner format too.
