About the Author
Barbara MacKinnon is a professor emerita of philosophy at the University of San Francisco. During her 30 years of teaching, her instruction and writing focused primarily on the history of ethics and contemporary ethical issues. She enjoys reading widely, playing the piano, and traveling.

Andrew Fiala is chair and professor of philosophy at Fresno State University, as well as director of the university's Ethics Center. His scholarly writing focuses on war and peace, politics, religion, and ethics. He also is a columnist for the Fresno Bee.

Good intro book with generally balanced presentation

Good intro book with generally balanced presentation. However, there is bias evident to the careful reader. One example is the use of religious concepts to support some arguments but not others. For instance, capital punishment uses religion to argue against more strongly than for; abortion has little on religious arguments. This stands out as selective reasoning and detracts from the book.

Good condition, pretty good book.

Arrived in excellent condition and arrived promptly. The context of the book is not as difficult to get through since it makes modern day references (like the Hunger Games) but is still is long. Wouldn't be able to get away with procrastinating these readings.

Aliens Novels: Book 3, The Female War / 0-553-56159-6

Having thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the Aliens series (Earth Hive and Nightmare Asylum), I have mixed feelings about this book.

We join the series almost precisely where we left off in "Nightmare Asylum" - with Wilks, Bille, and Ripley mooning about on the lunar rescue station and plotting how they can help in the grand scheme of human against alien. Ripley has come up with a daring plan that involves gathering together the Dreamers on the lunar station - those empaths who pick up the telepathic communications of the aliens in their dreams - for a mission that will ultimately doom the aliens on Earth to extinction. A great deal of attention is lavished on the supporting characters, making this motley crew of Dreamers the most fleshed-out supporting characters in the series so far, and providing me with actual concern that they might die on the mission, rather than mentally consigning them off as anonymous cannon fodder like so many before them. The plot expositions is nicely done as well, with the authors considering carefully the logistics of their plan, and how to pull off the technical details of Ripley's daring and drastic scheme.

These details are a case of 'too little, too late', though, because the actual plot of "Female War" is very thin, verging on the ridiculous. You see, empaths sense the presence of aliens, which is why Dreamers have been used in the past to pinpoint nearby alien nests. However, it turns out that the empaths have not been sensing the nearby alien nests *directly*, but have rather been picking up the ambient telepathy waves directed *at* the nearby aliens *from* the Queen of Queens (QoQ) back on their home planet (not the 'home' planet from "Earth Hive", incidentally). The QoQ knows where each of her children are in the universe and send them constant telepathic commands to come back to her. The Dreamers are able to pick up these commands and pinpoint the location of the home world, by remembering star layouts from their dreams. Ripley realizes that if the QoQ can be kidnapped from the home world and dropped on Earth, then all the aliens will flock to her in a single localized spot and it'll just be the work of a few nukes to take care of the alien infestation forever. This plot has more than a few problems associated with it, not the least of which is WHY the QoQ sends this constant signal - what's the point of having all your drones gathered to you rather than spreading out, hunting, and perpetuating the species? Some half-hearted attempts are made to suggest that the aliens might be bio-weapons, with the suggestion that the QoQ might be some kind of return beacon or something, but this never really pans out and frankly seems somewhat silly.

Anyway, Ripley decides to gather up all the Dreamers, or as many as are game, hijack a ship from the lunar station, travel to the alien home world, kidnap the QoQ, drop her off on Earth, and then set off a long-dismantled nuclear bomb to wipe out the aliens when they gather at critical mass. Easy peasy. To heighten the tension and provide motivation, the authors include a pretty implausible scenario: the military is still sending regular sorties down to Earth to engage the aliens (despite the ridiculous odds of a dozen marines against a planet-wide infestation) and to look for survivors (despite the fact that there really shouldn't be any more at this point, and despite the serious risk of contamination of the lunar station if one is infected). These sorties, however, give a useful excuse to take the stolen transport ship out on 'maneuvers', so we let it pass.

The ship of Dreamers travels to the home world in relative peace and quiet and here is where I get a little annoyed. The theme of the victim hunting the hunter via a telepathic link is a time honored tradition, used at least as far back as Dracula. However, it is reasonable to pose, as Stoker does, several serious questions: Is the link merely one-way, or does the hunter have full knowledge of the victim's plans and is laying in wait for them? Are the actions of the victim truly their own if they are under telepathic influence? Will the telepathic victims be able to maintain their own minds in the overwhelming presence of the hunter? These are questions that can and should be posed, and the authors hint at a possible twist: Did the QoQ call them to her intentionally? Are their plans really hers? Is the QoQ aware of their plans and prepared for their arrival? All these hinted questions are then completely discarded, which really bugs me. At the very least, a few non-dreamers should have been brought along as backup, in case the dreamers lost control of themselves on the planet, but no.

Then the silly become ludicrous: the QoQ is not buried deep within a mountain, surrounded by thousands of drones, but rather is resting placidly on the planet's surface, readily available for Ripley to hover a ship over her, goad her into a rage, and trick her into scrambling up into the ship. Despite the fact that even the drones on this planet are giant-sized, the group escapes with implausibly minor casualties. Several point-blank shots to the aliens fail to slosh gallons of acid over the main characters, a serendipitous fact that they chalk up to extraordinarily good luck. The QoQ thus secure, they race back to Earth on the double. There, the plan is to drop the QoQ off near the main cluster of nukes, hope to god that she nests in that general area, and wire the nukes to go off after a six month delay allowing most all of the aliens to travel to this new nest. In the meantime, Ripley and Billie decide to rescue the last little girl on planet Earth and will do their best Rambo impersonations, fighting off waves and waves of hundreds of stampeding aliens without sustaining a single major injury.

If this weren't enough, I have to register a complaint with regard to Ripley in this book. A twist has been introduced in order to explain the one question I didn't care about (How can Ripley be here when she's 'supposed' to be dying on the prison planet in Alien 3?) whilst ignoring the massive amount of new questions this ridiculous twist brings up, not the least of which being Who, What, Where, When, How, and Why? This is, in my opinion, an inexcusably sloppy way to resolve a continuity problem and I would have preferred they just stick with the time-honored tradition that books don't have to match movies. Anyway, they are still stuck with a problem if they want to match the movies, because there's really no way to reconcile the problem that the cast of Alien Resurrection have never seen or heard of the aliens, despite the fact that (according to the books), they destroyed Earth and nearly wiped out humanity.

Really, I didn't regret reading this book. The writing was okay, even if the plot was ridiculous and sometimes rushed. It's worth a look if you just want to finish out the tale of Wilks and Billie from the first two novels. However, if you're not already a big fan, there's nothing really here for you. And even if you *are* a fan, most of the 'alien details' included here are just nonsensical and stupid, which may well leave you frustrated.

Whimsy in science?

Lyall Watson is a renaissance man, and his vast and varied experiences, readings
and interests are easily on display in this and all his other books. Watson has an eye for whimsical and unusual events, for beautiful images whether natural
or manufactured, and a keen intution for the magic in the ordinary image, thought, and objects.

This book specifically addresses all those strange and unexplained events which our orthodox scientists (isn't that an oxymoron) reject as unproven,
untested, and unscientific. Watson who holds a PhD in some branch of the natural sciences sees the inifinite humor, compassion, and joy inherent in being
alive on this earth, and the strange inhabitants of it, whether it be Komodo dragons, human beings, or rivers. In his stories and anecdotes inanimate objects
come to life, water can be happy or sad, mammals can re-grow severed limbs, and teh existance of shells (with their forms often representing mathematical perfection)
can have hidden lives....

If for no other reason than to have whimsical, unusual, and interesting trivia to talk about at a dry and dull dinner table, this book is to be read and marvelled at...

I read and enjoyed this book years ago, and copied a chapter I have reread a number of times and shared with friends. In the chapter called The Essence of Balance, Watson describes a culture of cannibals living in Indonesian New Guinea. These Papuan Asmat people have (had, presumably) a system of headhunting that at first glance is repellent: eating your dead enemy's brains? But in delicate detail, one comes to potentially understand this system as infinitely more civilized (to start with, by resolving tribal tensions with a single death) than our supposedly superior ways of bombing, maiming, and starving hundreds or millions. This essay alone is worth the price of the book.

Flat-out Amazing.

Not only do you feel your brain cells stretch with reading this book, you actually come out of it feeling smarter. This is not something that can be said of most books! Watson does an amazing job of drawing seemingly unconnected threads together and showing us how they fit--from a marine operculum's relationship to an extinct species of Man on the Skeleton Coast, to the opening sentence of one of the most amazing and ultimately uplifting stories of cultural contact and population pressure: "Some of my best friends are cannibals." The book sits with you long after you've read it. Watson does amazing research and it shows.

The Snowball is an in-depth review of Warren Buffett's life. At times I found this book surprisingly candid as it identified the frailties as well as strengths of Warren Buffett. This helped me associate with Warren Buffett the person and in my opinion, makes him seem all the more impressive given the challenges he had to overcome during this rise to fame. In addition to a candid personal assessment, this book provides a solid approach to wealth management as well as living life in general. I found The Snowball to be a must read for those interested in leadership, self-help, or even just a good story about a remarkable individual.

We see him on his living room floor watching, on a brand-new 1952 Zenith television, the broadcast of his father testifying before the House Committee on un-American Activities, at the beach in Malibu sizing up a French poseur in pursuit of his mother and her money, and on a trip with his brother and friends to a bar and brothel in Mexico. Through his sensitive discernment, the novel’s stories build until one moment crystallizes all that has come before.

In this novel, Leslie Epstein has revealed his past through the lens of his art. Like an American Proust, he shows how memory shapes the crucial events of a life.

Leslie Epstein, whose father and uncle, Philip G. and Julius J. Epstein, wrote Arsenic and Old Lace, Casablanca, and many other classics of the golden era of films, is the author of nine previous books of fiction, including King of the Jews and San Remo Drive, both published by Handsel Books/Other Press. He lives in Brookline, Massachusetts, where for many years he has directed the Creative Writing Program at Boston University.

Five rose flour cookbook

This book was a staple at home, where there was a premium on food always tasting the greatest that it possibly could. There are some recipes here that are memorable. And every entry that I have ever read about this book mentions the Brownies. These alone are worth the price of the book. Also this is a totally no nonsense book, that along with the recipes for most things will also give you great recipes for interesting and tasty leftovers. Amazon reunited me with the memories and tastes of my youth filled with delicious food. thank you

With that attention-grabbing first line, this unusual and compelling novel tells the story of Harry, killed in a bicycle accident. Initially confused by his new existence in the Other Side, the flippant 12-year-old realizes he cannot move toward the peace of the Great Blue Yonder until he has addressed the unfinished business in his life. On the day of the accident, he and his sister had a fight in which he told her she'd be sorry when he was dead. Knowing she must be feeling tremendous pain over their parting words, he resolves to make amends. With the help of a Victorian-era lad named Arthur, he goes back home as a ghost. He sees many things he didn't expect and gains an understanding of his actions when he was alive. His death has had a devastating impact on his family, fulfilling every kid's fantasy of his family being sorry when he's gone. By now, however, Harry has grown up enough to be upset by the depth of his family's sorrow. He is able to communicate with his sister, gaining closure for her and a newfound maturity for himself. The book ends with Harry asking readers to wish him well as he heads toward the Great Blue Yonder. Sound strange? It is. It is also amusing, poignant, and deeply moving. Great in any language!

I am from Salt Lake City, Utah, but because of my dad's job I live in Japan. I love going to the library and reading books that have been translating into Japanese from English. I found this book at my school library just barely translated from English. I borrowed it right after it came and read it in 1 night! It was the best book! I had always felt bad for people who had things left unfinished before they died, but after reading this book it made me feel better. It if funny, creative, and great for kids. It is not innapropriate at all. It also taught me to always be nice to my siblings because anything could happen to them at anytime. I love this author who also wrote the book "The Stolen". I recommend it too!

anyone can find the way to the Great Blue Yonder...

This story is not only about death, it is a book which teaches you how to live. The Great Blue Yonder is a book that reveals solemnity in changes using an interesting teenager��s voice, creating one of the most enjoyable novels in my book list. A boy in the age of 11 to 12 dies in a bike accident with his last words to his sister, ��you��ll be sorry when I��m dead.�� With regrets of the words he said, he comes to a land for after-life, and this land is completely different from what he expected. It is said that when one��s done with the passage of life, one goes through death, and when one is ready to let go, then one can emerge to the Great Blue Yonder. Yet the boy, Harry, and the friend he made during his ��death period,�� Arthur, both struggle to let go of their ��unfinished business.�� To resolve, Arthur and Harry came back to the Land of the Living and become ghosts. During their visit, Harry is shocked and disappointed at how fast people have forgotten his existence for only a few weeks, and in the end, he happily finds that it isn��t so. Harry sadly but successfully resolves his problem with his sister, and then feels the relief he longs for. With the heart of readiness and satisfaction, Harry moves on to the Great Blue Yonder.
Many people see the book as a story with the imagination of after-life and the discussions of death. I see this story as a metaphor for the changes everyone faces in life. If one ignores the fact that Harry dies, and views it as if he just left the town, the story still has the same effect. What touches me the most in the story is how Harry feels so forgotten, so insignificant, and so unbearably hurt when he sees his friends move on with life. The same way people feel after they move or change schools, they think less and less about their classmates, likewise, their friends think less and less about them. As much as people want to keep the spirit with their old friends, distance and time do not allow it, and it is effortless in trying, for it is a fact that cannot be changed in life. Even though I am still alive, I am as helpless as Harry is, life goes on. Harry may be dead, but he still succeeds in resolving his problem with his sister; I believe in some ways, the author is saying ��resolve your anger and sorrows with the one who caused it, that is how one can move on��. By forgiving and forgetting, anyone can find the way to the Great Blue Yonder�K

Matters of Death

In The Great Blue Yonder, Alex Shearer uses a boy named Harry as the main character to challenge readers into thinking about what life might be like after death. The book starts with Harry dead and on the �Other Side�, a place that the dead inhabit. It is here that Harry meets another important character Arthur, a young boy who has been dead for over one hundred years. Both Harry and Arthur have some unfinished business to tend to. Prior to Harry�s death, he and his sister got into a fight resulting in the two never wanting to see the other again. As for Arthur, he has been searching for his mother on the �Other Side� since his arrival. His mother died at his birth, and he has had nothing but one of her buttons off a blouse to remember her by. The two�s journey results in the eventual escape of Harry out of the �Other Side.� It is back in the land of the living where Harry gets an opportunity to visit his friends at school, and then his family at home. Harry is heartbroken when he finds that his friends have been able to manage life without him. This is very hard for him to deal with. When Harry goes home he realizes that he has the ability to communicate with the living, and he uses this opportunity to apologize to his sister. When Harry returns to the �Other Side� he finds Arthur and his mother have reunited. The book ends with Harry, Arthur, and Arthur�s mother passing from the �Other Side� to the �Great Blue Yonder�, a place where the dead who have found closure are able to go.
In The Great Blue Yonder, Shearer writes from a first person perspective. Through this method of writing, Shearer is able to effectively aid the readers in imagining what it might be like to look at the world after one has left it. This method is successful in getting the readers to think about some very realistic thoughts one might have after death. Some interesting aspects of death Shearer deals with in the book are communication with the living and the dead, the process of mourning and healing, and the dwelling place of the dead. Because this book was written from a first person perspective, Shearer is able to connect his readers with the main character in a way that uniquely challenges readers to imagine their own �life� after death. Another unique aspect of this book is the fact that the character dealing with death is a young boy. In reality, very few young boys and girls think about the idea of death and what may follow. By using Harry as the main character, adolescents may be encouraged to think about death for the first time and realize it doesn�t just come to the elderly. I also think it encourages readers to look at life with the ever- present possibility of death. For example, the fight between Harry and his sister, and having to leave the world without apologizing might persuade readers to deal with hard feelings and grudges between loved ones.
Many readers, because of their faith, may be troubled by the idea of afterlife that is portrayed in this story. For example, as a Christian, I believe that when an individual dies they remain lifeless until given new life by our Heavenly Father. My beliefs of death, like many others, oppose the viewpoint in which Shearer writes from. But even Mormons, Atheists, Muslims, and any number of other viewpoints might also find the perspective disconcerting. While some may not take the story completely seriously and use it to confront certain issues, others could be offended and concerned with the ideas presented to young adults reading it.
Overall I think that Shearer deals with the idea of death in a tactful though unrealistic way. He uses humor to bring to light a serious matter, and would make any reader think about important issues whether they thought Shearer�s story was realistic or not. Although I disagree with many of Shearer�s points throughout the book, I appreciate the challenges he provides for the reader. I believe that children at some point need to be exposed to serious issues such as death, so Shearer�s writing could be productive in challenging an older audience to think critically about death and all that surrounds it.

Lower Your Expectations

I'm disappointed in the narrative in this book. It is bare bones information and not much to go on if you're hoping to plan your own "drives of a lifetime." Even the photos are a bit disappointing, mainly because there are only a couple for each drive and I'm not sure they give a really accurate sense of what you'll find. If I'm going to spend my limited resources and time to travel afar to get to one of these road trips, I'm going to want a lot more information. This book barely gives me a start.

That said, it's worth thumbing through once or twice. Maybe it will provide a bit of inspiration. But don't expect more than that; in fact, don't expect too much of that.

I love travel books -- travel literature, guidebooks, picture books. This one is ok. But I definitely don't love it.

NOT useful for travel planning

This book was a disappointment. Yes, it is beautiful and entertaining and would be a lovely addition to any coffee table. But I purchased it with the idea of using it as a travel planner, a use for which it sadly disappoints. The drives are not organized or cross referenced in any useful manner. Some drives are 5 miles long. One was 10 weeks long. Some receive an entire page of dense text. Some get a 2" square blurb. Descriptive, yes. Useful, no. I sent it back.

Speedy delivery/ nice book. The reason I bought the book, is because I am handicapped and won't ever be able to travel. So if I can see pictures and learn about places, that the next best thing.
