The goal of the first edition of Physical Hydrology was to provide a comprehensive text for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students that treats hydrology as a distinct geoscience. It attempted to develop an understanding of the conceptual basis of hydrology and an introduction to the quantitative relations that implement that understanding in answering scientific and water-resources-management questions. The text seemed to fulfill a need, and I have been pleased with its reception by my colleagues and students.

My primary goals in revising Physical Hydrology have been to incorporate significant advances in the rapidly developing field of hydrologic science, to provide a more explicit connection of that science to hydrologic modeling, and to make more complete and useful the treatment of the relation between scientific hydrology and water-resources management. The major changes that have resulted are the following:

* Chapter 2 (Basic Hydrologic Concepts) now concludes with an introduction to hydrologic modeling, including discussions of model use, modeling terminology, and the process of model development. It also introduces the BROOK90 model, a physically based, lumped-parameter model that can be readily accessed on the World-Wide Web for student use. Discussions of the ways in which BROOK90 incorporates the physical relations discussed in the text are included as boxes in many of the subsequent chapters.
* Chapter 3 (Global Climate, Hydrologic Cycle, Soils, and Vegetation) now includes a tabulation of documented trends in global change of climatic and hydrologic quantities.
* In Chapter 4 (Precipitation), I have added a more extensive discussion of precipitation recycling and a new section on methods for handling missing data—an almost universal problem in hydrologic analysis. Also, the discussion of methods for estimating areal precipitation has been streamlined somewhat (one of the few places in which I was able to cut!).
* In Chapter 5 (Snow and Snowmelt), I have updated the discussion of ways of estimating energy-balance components and added a discussion of hybrid snowmelt models that combine energy-balance and temperature-index approaches.
* Chapter 6 (Water in Soils) now introduces the concepts of soil-moisture diffusivity and sorptivity, adds a discussion of equilibrium soil-moisture profiles, and expands the discussion of moisture redistribution.
* Chapter 7 (Evapotranspiration) now contains a brief discussion of soil evaporation as well as updates of the treatments of lake evaporation and energy-budget estimation.
* In Chapter 8 (Ground Water), the discussion of ground—water-surface-water relations has been expanded to include hyporheic flow and the Dupuit approximation for unconfined aquifers draining to streams.
* Chapter 9 (Stream Response to Water Input) has been reorganized so that the discussion of the mechanisms of stream response to water-input events now precedes the sections on rainfall-runoff modeling. The treatments of both mechanisms and modeling have been substantially revised and updated, and much of the detailed discussion of open-channel flow has been moved to Appendix B.
* Chapter 10 (Hydrology and Water Resources) has been entirely rewritten and expanded. It now includes a more complete and modern treatment of water-resource management goals and processes; a more detailed discussion of water supply and demand, including the concept of "safe yield" in various ground-water and surface-water settings and an expanded discussion of the estimation and application of flow-duration curves; a more complete discussion of water-quality issues; an expanded section on floods, including flood-frequency analysis; a completely new section on drought and low-flow analysis; and a concluding section on current and projected United States and global water use.
* Appendix A (Hydrologic Quantities) has been reorganized and largely rewritten to provide a more logical presentation of dimensions, units, and significant figures.
* Appendix B (Water as a Substance) now contains the detailed treatment of open-channel flow that was formerly in Chapter 9.
* Appendix C (Statistics) now includes discussions of approaches to fitting probability distributions to data and estimating parameters of distributions, which incorporate the application of L-moments, and a section on statistical criteria for calibrating and validating models.
* In Appendix D (Water and Energy in the Atmosphere), the treatment of turbulent transfer has been substantially revised.
* In Appendix F (Stream Gaging), the section on slope-area estimation of discharge has been completely revised.
* Appendix G is new. It contains links to hydrologic information on the World-Wide Web and is found on the CD accompanying the text.

In keeping with my goal of treating hydrology as a science and of providing an entree to the literature of the field, this edition continues the practice of supporting its discussion with extensive reference citations, in the style of a journal article rather than that of most textbooks. In the revision, over 200 reference citations have been added, and they now total over 800.

In carrying out the primary goals of the revision, I also saw opportunities to improve several other aspects of the text:

* Cross referencing is facilitated by use of a decimal numbering system for headings.
* Many of the exercises have been revised so that they provide more opportunity for student exploration of topics rather than simple "plug-and-chug" work.
* The spreadsheets on the CD that accompanies the book are now in EXCEL, and their formats have been improved and regularized. More modern units are used (kPa instead of mb; J and W instead of cal).
* The notation, especially for statistical quantities, is generally more conventional (and, I hope, less cumbersome).
* The "." symbol for multiplication is used throughout; this allows the use of multi-letter symbols without ambiguity.

A steaming pile of scatterbrained presentation

I'm currently a student using this book in a 400-level hydrology course. This is quite possibly the worst textbook I have encountered in my academic career. It somehow manages to make even simple material that I already kind of know very difficult to understand. The writing style is very pompous and generally otherwise inaccessible. Variables used in equations are either not well-defined or used inconsistently. Examples, for lack of a better word, suck. Figures are confusing rendered. Organization is terrible.

All in all, a fairly good textbook example of how not to write a textbook.

Physical Hydrology is okay. It was required for one of my classes, but I honestly did not use it very much except for when it came to homework problems. The text was difficult to read and understand at times (especially for me since I'm just an undergrad), and like others mentioned, the equations could have used further discussion rather than just listing the variables. It's not my favorite book but I am keeping it as a possible reference in the future. If you're looking at this book for pure pleasure or reference, I'd suggest looking at something a little easier to read.

At the end of 2014 through the Radio-Television-Interview-Report of Bradley Communication, Inc. out of Philadelphia, Don Miller got three radio interviews as an epilepsy expert. With Bob Gouley of Issues Today Radio Don spoke for eight minutes about epilepsy and his epilepsy memoir: Epilepsy Memoir: My 40-Year Detour, the title of which he got from Joe McAllister of Bradley Communications. He spoke with Michael Dresser of The Michael Dresser for 16 minutes. Finally he did three 10 minute interviews: 30 minutes total with Neal Howard of Health Professional Radio. Mr. Howard and Mister Miller discussed an alcohol addiction and how he overcame it in 1986, epilepsy fitness, relaxation techniques used to lower the pulse rate and drop your blood pressure 30 points, general epilepsy description as well as epilepsy first aid, if any. Excellent book. Mr. Miller tells his personal story of 40 years coping with epilepsy in an entertaining and educational story of his own life. The book gives insight into dealing with a chronic, life-altering condition that is fascinating and at the same time tells us the details of what epilepsy is and how to navigate the medical treatments.

I recommend this book. I think it would be an invaluable guide for those with epilepsy or those who have a friend or relative with the condition. Miller also tells us the personal side of living with epilepsy. People who have to cope with a life-altering condition like epilepsy have very interesting stories to tell.

Impossible to put down!

If you are looking for a book that is filled with fun and excitement that is hard to put down, this one's for you! The story line is great and I can't wait to find out what happens with some of the other couples in the next books.

Quirky Characters Abound!

This book was so great! I will be honest here, the only reason this is a 4 instead of a 5 is because of the editing issues. There were quite a few and usually that's a stopper for me and I will say that I'm truly surprised at myself for making it through with the number of issues. That right there should tell you something because not only did it not stop me but I still absolutely LOVED this story. It was crazy and quirky, hilarious and heart-stopping, just everything that I want in a good read and then some. Jamie and Siri have to be two of my favorite characters of late. They had it all, every single thing I look for in a couple is there in these two. The book was fast paced and I thought at first that the pace was going to be bother me because things for these two move faster than lightening but it all just fit. The story is fun and lively and so full of heart that by the end you are in love with all of them. Siri is such a strong female character but her strength and the trials that she has to go through don't take away from her incredible sense of humor and personality, they only enhance it. Changed my life

I bought the original edition, used it in 1994, and it completely changed my life. My handwriting was illegible, and I was embarrassed to send thank you notes and write letters (l know, before email was invented). I thought changing my handwriting was something that was impossible, until this book. I took the task seriously, as I really wanted results. I would sit in front of the television every night, listen to the programs, and just practice my letters. At the end of 4 months, my handwriting was transformed. I have shared this story with many people, when they tell me they have things in their lives they don't think they can change. I've heard that your handwriting reveals many traits. One unexpected change in my personality was that I no longer procrastinate. Don't ask me why or how that happened, but when I transformed my handwriting I stopped being a procrastinator.

The book is written for adults. I encourage you to give it a try. It is simple, but not easy---but oh, so worth it. It takes diligent practice. To this day, now 20 years later, when I need to calm down or focus, I practice my handwriting.

Money saver

Best way to save money and have children with good handwriting. Used the workbooks for the older kids but the price made a good jump and x4 twice a year more than I wanted to spend. Found this book slipped the pages into slip covers and into a 3-ring notebook the kids can practice and practice until mastered! Everyone uses the same book so in the end saving on the environment!

Excellent resource except for one crucial mismatch in publication design. The extremely small size of the Italic Handwriting Letterform line spacing needed for doing the practice sheet exercises are especially difficult for adults who lack the visual acutiy.
At age 50+ plus it becomes very difficult to handle especially without eyeglass magnifiers. My advice to the the publishers is to print a large type version for us Senior Citizens who lack the visual acuity we once had..
I could have easily utilized the college ruled and standard notebook widths at say 45 years of age.. My Senior Calligraphy friends agree that 9mm and slightly larger width lines are suitable for the large number of Senior taking up Italic Handwriting and Italic Handwriting.

An Excellent, Thoughtful Book

In The End of Captivity? A Primate’s Reflection on Zoos, Conservation, and Christian Ethics, York explores the uniquely human phenomenon of keeping other animals captive, not only in zoos and sanctuaries, but in labs, farms, and our homes. Since it is quite impossible for animals to live completely free of humans, how do we Christians talk about and into the peaceable kingdom promised in the Scriptures? How does captivity of animals in its various forms serve their end, the chief purpose of which is to glorify God? And if we agree that creation is good, how do we best embody that claim? York’s writing is thoughtful and funny, humble and well-informed. Committed to advocating well for all animals, York builds a big tent and encourages everyone who wants to do a little better by our animal brethren to come on in and have a chat. It’s a must-read for any Christian serious about protecting the planet and its many inhabitants.

A Thoughtful and Engaging Book

Tripp York thoughtfully reviews the many ways that humans hold nonhumans captive, and then he reflects on how these arrangements relate to Christian ethics. York focuses much of his attention on zoos and sanctuaries, and he notes that some do a much better job than others at caring for animals. They also differ widely in their commitment to conservation. Consequently, he objects to sweeping arguments for or against these institutions made by both animal advocates and zoo proponents.

Virtually all land animals are captive in a sense. Even “wild” animals have restricted ranges, and they exceed their human-defined boundaries at their great peril. Not all domesticated captive animals are treated badly, and many companion animals – though held captive – are treated like members of the family.

York notes that more factory farmed animals are killed in the United States each hour than are held in zoos and sanctuaries throughout the world. He rightly condemns factory farms’ abysmal treatment of animals. Initially, he found the utilitarian arguments of Peter Singer compelling, but over time he has found that the Judeo-Christian tradition presents a powerful case against contemporary mistreatment of animals. His thinking has led to some new and refreshing ways to defend nonhumans against mistreatment. I encourage Christian animal advocates to read this book.

Step right up for the greatest show on earth (without the performing animals of course).

Tripp York is becoming one of the more important voices regarding the relationship between humans and other animals. His earlier work in A Faith Embracing All Creatures and its follow up A Faith Encompassing All Creation set York up nicely for this monograph. Of course it also doesn’t hurt that he is married to a biologist and has spent much of his time in recent years at zoos other places where human animals hold other animals captive. York, in his typical fashion, interweaves personal experience, pop culture references, astute criticism, and learned reflection. And being the good Mennonite he is he even suggests that zoos might be a “third way” as it were between prison and salvific ark (18). Though I note it in jest, there is something important about this willingness to nuance the discussion because in that willingness to move into the grey areas we might begin to understand the place of animals in the world, and our place in relation to the rest of creation, and especially with the Creator.

York takes readers through the bible from Genesis to Revelation. If we don’t find an ezer, a companion and helper, in the animal kingdom, then what is their purpose and how are we to relate to them? How should we understand the violence of nature when we are promised that in the eschaton that the wolf will lie down with the lamb instead of tearing it to shreds? What have St. Francis and Barnum & Bailey to do with one another? If you are concerned about Jesus, or about animals, or both then this book is worth your time.

An Awesome Classic Reference Guide for Horror Movie Fans

I really wanted the Overlook Film Encyclopedia or Horror Films to accompany the Sci-Fi version of the guide on my shelf, but sadly that book costs several hundred dollars and is long out of print. As best as I can tell this is pretty much the same thing- except it only goes up until 1985 (Some editions of the Overlook version cover films up until 1995) oh and it has different cover art. While I prefer the Bride of Frankenstein cover on the other one, I much much prefer the cost of this version. I don't really have much to add that hasn't already been said better by other reviewers- it's a great resource for those looking to make "to-watch" lists of classic movies they may have missed. It has great cross referencing glossaries in the back and the book is laid out chronologically by year. The synopses are brief and better written than many other film encyclopedias, and it takes a very academic approach to a genre that is often treated in a much more flippant manner. The mini-reviews are obviously written by experts on the genre, as they often contain pointed critical analysis and references to other films/directors/etc. that may be necessary to proper appreciation of the film. This is definitely the guide for those fans who take their horror films seriously and want to learn more about films they may have not seen. Any self-respecting fan needs this guide.

The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies

The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies is just that; it is the definitive textbook authority on all things Horror, spanning over eight decades of cinema. It is an important reference tool as well as a complete history lesson on the trends and growths that were experienced within the genre, beginning with the earliest silent classics and ending at the height of the Slasher era, when the book was published. The format is laid out chronologically, dividing each section by the decade and listing the films in alphabetical order by the year of their release in their original countries. Films from nearly every developed nation can be found within its pages, including many entries that are dedicated to the German Expressionists and Asian filmmakers, while also introducing many more obscure titles from countries like Austria or Brazil. Phil Hardy interjects with an informed opinion and rounded knowledge on each of the films being discussed. While his opinions on many of the entries will not be shared by all readers (particularly in his general distaste for the Slasher films), his critiques are always justified and rarely biased. Coming in at over 400 pages, with over 450 black and white stills and an astounding 1,300 film reviews, The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies is an absolute must-have for every Horror fan. It is impossible to thumb through its pages without discovering a slew of exciting new films that may have been long forgotten, but it is integral to read the text from start to finish rather than simply using it as a petty reference tool in order to better one's understanding of the genre.

Great reference for classic horror

This is a superior reference for horror movies. It traces the history of the horror genre from the earliest days of film by means of highly intelligent reviews of hundreds of movies. It also includes a list of major cast and crew members for each film. Although now a bit dated (it ends in 1985), it is a must for anyone who is interested in classic horror. A couple of warnings for those who may be interested: some of the stills that illustrate the book include nudity, and many of the reviews contain spoilers. However, anyone who loves horror movies in the pre-slasher era should find this tremendously entertaining and informative.

The writer does a great job at setting the scenes up both on Earth and in the Overworld and showing the personalities of the characters, along with the twist you don't quite see coming, which is enjoyable, because many times, you do see it coming pretty plainly. Chris Lange has done it again with "A Touch Too Much", Chris is a master Vampire writer. Her Vampires are so interesting in the way they conduct themselves. I loved the characters in this story, the connection between them that at times you cheer and at other times you don't want them together. The sex is very HOT and I have to agree with another reviewer that the tub scene was so so HOT!!
Once I started reading it I could not put it down. If you are a fan of Vampire stories and want to read something a little different I recommend this book. Keep it up Chris!! Can't wait for another book from you.
