Praise for "The Blond Knight of Germany"
By Clyde Tolson
This book is a well-written biography of Germany's greatest WWII ace, little known to the West, because he fought on the Eastern Front. Believe me, though, he is well-known in Germany, not only for his wartime exploits but for his experiences as a POW in Stalin's Soviet Russia lasting 10 1/2 long years after WWII was over and his role in the post-war Luftwaffe. In addition to biography, the book is a study of the consequences of coming under the jack boot of Soviet Communism, the Soviet prisoner experience, physically, mentally and spiritually along with methods and techniques for combatting and overcoming the brutal treatment by a Communist secret police regime. There are references to the US experience in Korea and Viet Nam that may be unknown to the younger reader needing to relearn the lessons of history so as not to repeat it in the present time.

Great book about the greatest fighter pilot of all time
By Clarence Coleman
Great book about the greatest fighter pilot of all time. (352 victories) Great details regarding becoming a fighter pilot during the early stages of the German invasion of Russia during WW2. Very honest. Early on Erich screwed up, was repromanded appropriately by his superiors, and he learned from his mistakes. Later on he was the teacher for the new German fighter pilots in his squadron, which Erich did his best to keep alive during a very dangerous time. Highly Recommended!

A GREAT read!
By Enzo
I love this book, it gives an awesome view of aerial combat from 'the other side',
and will ruin you when you watch old war movies, how these men fought in air
combat is nothing at all like what Hollywood made in the movies.
Erich also gave a somewhat heartbreaking story of his personal life while
in Russian prisons, and how the Hitler's staff (Goering mainly) was giving the wrong
information to Hitler. If Hitler had the correct info the war would have gone on longer
and there would have been more allied casualties.

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, by Christopher McDougall

Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence. With the help of Caballo Blanco, a mysterious loner who lives among the tribe, the author was able not only to uncover the secrets of the Tarahumara but also to find his own inner ultra-athlete, as he trained for the challenge of a lifetime: a fifty-mile race through the heart of Tarahumara country pitting the tribe against an odd band of Americans, including a star ultramarathoner, a beautiful young surfer, and a barefoot wonder.

With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultrarunners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to the climactic race in the Copper Canyons. Born to Run is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Christopher McDougall

Question: Born to Run explores the life and running habits of the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s Copper Canyon, arguably the greatest distance runners in the world. What are some of the secrets you learned from them?

Christopher McDougall: The key secret hit me like a thunderbolt. It was so simple, yet such a jolt. It was this: everything I’d been taught about running was wrong. We treat running in the modern world the same way we treat childbirth—it’s going to hurt, and requires special exercises and equipment, and the best you can hope for is to get it over with quickly with minimal damage.

Then I meet the Tarahumara, and they’re having a blast. They remember what it’s like to love running, and it lets them blaze through the canyons like dolphins rocketing through waves. For them, running isn’t work. It isn’t a punishment for eating. It’s fine art, like it was for our ancestors. Way before we were scratching pictures on caves or beating rhythms on hollow trees, we were perfecting the art of combining our breath and mind and muscles into fluid self-propulsion over wild terrain. And when our ancestors finally did make their first cave paintings, what were the first designs? A downward slash, lightning bolts through the bottom and middle—behold, the Running Man.

The Tarahumara have a saying: “Children run before they can walk.” Watch any four-year-old—they do everything at full speed, and it’s all about fun. That’s the most important thing I picked up from my time in the Copper Canyons, the understanding that running can be fast and fun and spontaneous, and when it is, you feel like you can go forever. But all of that begins with your feet. Strange as it sounds, the Tarahumara taught me to change my relationship with the ground. Instead of hammering down on my heels, the way I’d been taught all my life, I learned to run lightly and gently on the balls of my feet. The day I mastered it was the last day I was ever injured.

Q: You trained for your first ultramarathon—a race organized by the mysterious gringo expat Caballo Blanco between the Tarahumara and some of America’s top ultrarunners—while researching and writing this book. What was your training like?

CM: It really started as kind of a dare. Just by chance, I’d met an adventure-sports coach from Jackson Hole, Wyoming named Eric Orton. Eric’s specialty is tearing endurance sports down to their basic components and looking for transferable skills. He studies rock climbing to find shoulder techniques for kayakers, and applies Nordic skiing’s smooth propulsion to mountain biking. What he’s looking for are basic engineering principles, because he’s convinced that the next big leap forward in fitness won’t come from strength or technology, but plain, simple durability. With some 70% of all runners getting hurt every year, the athlete who can stay healthy and avoid injury will leave the competition behind.

So naturally, Eric idolized the Tarahumara. Any tribe that has 90-year-old men running across mountaintops obviously has a few training tips up its sleeve. But since Eric had never actually met the Tarahumara, he had to deduce their methods by pure reasoning. His starting point was uncertainty; he assumed that the Tarahumara step into the unknown every time they leave their caves, because they never know how fast they’ll have to sprint after a rabbit or how tricky the climbing will be if they’re caught in a storm. They never even know how long a race will be until they step up to the starting line—the distance is only determined in a last-minute bout of negotiating and could stretch anywhere from 50 miles to 200-plus.

Eric figured shock and awe was the best way for me to build durability and mimic Tarahumara-style running. He’d throw something new at me every day—hopping drills, lunges, mile intervals—and lots and lots of hills. There was no such thing, really, as long, slow distance—he’d have me mix lots of hill repeats and short bursts of speed into every mega-long run.

I didn’t think I could do it without breaking down, and I told Eric that from the start. I basically defied him to turn me into a runner. And by the end of nine months, I was cranking out four hour runs without a problem.

Q: You’re a six-foot four-inches tall, 200-plus pound guy—not anyone’s typical vision of a distance runner, yet you’ve completed ultra marathons and are training for more. Is there a body type for running, as many of us assume, or are all humans built to run?

CM: Yeah, I’m a big’un. But isn’t it sad that’s even a reasonable question? I bought into that bull for a loooong time. Why wouldn’t I? I was constantly being told by people who should know better that “some bodies aren’t designed for running.” One of the best sports medicine physicians in the country told me exactly that—that the reason I was constantly getting hurt is because I was too big to handle the impact shock from my feet hitting the ground. Just recently, I interviewed a nationally-known sports podiatrist who said, “You know, we didn’t ALL evolve to run away from saber-toothed tigers.” Meaning, what? That anyone who isn’t sleek as a Kenyan marathoner should be extinct? It’s such illogical blather—all kinds of body types exist today, so obviously they DID evolve to move quickly on their feet. It’s really awful that so many doctors are reinforcing this learned helplessness, this idea that you have to be some kind of elite being to handle such a basic, universal movement.

Q: If humans are born to run, as you argue, what’s your advice for a runner who is looking to make the leap from shorter road races to marathons, or marathons to ultramarathons? Is running really for everyone?

CM: I think ultrarunning is America’s hope for the future. Honestly. The ultrarunners have got a hold of some powerful wisdom. You can see it at the starting line of any ultra race. I showed up at the Leadville Trail 100 expecting to see a bunch of hollow-eyed Skeletors, and instead it was, “Whoah! Get a load of the hotties!” Ultra runners tend to be amazingly healthy, youthful and—believe it or not—good looking. I couldn’t figure out why, until one runner explained that throughout history, the four basic ingredients for optimal health have been clean air, good food, fresh water and low stress. And that, to a T, describes the daily life of an ultrarunner. They’re out in the woods for hours at a time, breathing pine-scented breezes, eating small bursts of digestible food, downing water by the gallons, and feeling their stress melt away with the miles. But here’s the real key to that kingdom: you have to relax and enjoy the run. No one cares how fast you run 50 miles, so ultrarunners don’t really stress about times. They’re out to enjoy the run and finish strong, not shave a few inconsequential seconds off a personal best. And that’s the best way to transition up to big mileage races: as coach Eric told me, “If it feels like work, you’re working too hard.”

Q: You write that distance running is the great equalizer of age and gender. Can you explain?

CM: Okay, I’ll answer that question with a question: Starting at age nineteen, runners get faster every year until they hit their peak at twenty-seven. After twenty-seven, they start to decline. So if it takes you eight years to reach your peak, how many years does it take for you to regress back to the same speed you were running at nineteen?

Go ahead, guess all you want. No one I’ve asked has ever come close. It’s in the book, so I won’t give it away, but I guarantee when you hear the answer, you’ll say, “No way. THAT old?” Now, factor in this: ultra races are the only sport in the world in which women can go toe-to-toe with men and hand them their heads. Ann Trason and Krissy Moehl often beat every man in the field in some ultraraces, while Emily Baer recently finished in the Top 10 at the Hardrock 100 while stopping to breastfeed her baby at the water stations.

So how’s that possible? According to a new body of research, it’s because humans are the greatest distance runners on earth. We may not be fast, but we’re born with such remarkable natural endurance that humans are fully capable of outrunning horses, cheetahs and antelopes. That’s because we once hunted in packs and on foot; all of us, men and women alike, young and old together.

Q: One of the fascinating parts of Born to Run is your report on how the ultrarunners eat—salad for breakfast, wraps with hummus mid-run, or pizza and beer the night before a run. As a runner with a lot of miles behind him, what are your thoughts on nutrition for running?

CM: Live every day like you’re on the lam. If you’ve got to be ready to pick up and haul butt at a moment’s notice, you’re not going to be loading up on gut-busting meals. I thought I’d have to go on some kind of prison-camp diet to get ready for an ultra, but the best advice I got came from coach Eric, who told me to just worry about the running and the eating would take care of itself. And he was right, sort of. I instinctively began eating smaller, more digestible meals as my miles increased, but then I went behind his back and consulted with the great Dr. Ruth Heidrich, an Ironman triathlete who lives on a vegan diet. She’s the one who gave me the idea of having salad for breakfast, and it’s a fantastic tip. The truth is, many of the greatest endurance athletes of all time lived on fruits and vegetables. You can get away with garbage for a while, but you pay for it in the long haul. In the book, I describe how Jenn Shelton and Billy “Bonehead” Barnett like to chow pizza and Mountain Dew in the middle of 100-mile races, but Jenn is also a vegetarian who most days lives on veggie burgers and grapes.

Q: In this difficult financial time, we’re experiencing yet another surge in the popularity of running. Can you explain this?

CM: When things look worst, we run the most. Three times, America has seen distance-running skyrocket and it’s always in the midst of a national crisis. The first boom came during the Great Depression; the next was in the ‘70s, when we were struggling to recover from a recession, race riots, assassinations, a criminal President and an awful war. And the third boom? One year after the Sept. 11 attacks, trailrunning suddenly became the fastest-growing outdoor sport in the country. I think there’s a trigger in the human psyche that activates our first and greatest survival skill whenever we see the shadow of approaching raptors.

From Booklist
From the depths of Mexico’s Copper Canyon to the heights of the Leadville Trail 100 ultramarathon in Colorado, from the centuries-old running techniques of Mexico’s Tarahumara tribe to a research lab at the University of Utah, author McDougall celebrates, in this engaging and picaresque account, humankind’s innate love of running. There are rogues aplenty here, such the deadly narco-traffickers who roam Copper Canyon, but there are many more who inspire, such as the Tarahumara runners, who show the rest of the world the false limitations we place on human endurance. McDougall has served as an Associated Press war correspondent, is a contributing editor to Men’s Health, and runs at his home in rural Pennsylvania, and he brings all of these experiences to bear in this slyly important, highly readable account. --Alan Moores

“Compelling. . . . Entertaining. . . . [McDougall] uses an extended portrait of one of the world's least known cultures, the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's Copper Canyons, to put modern American running under an exacting magnifying glass.”–San Francisco Chronicle

“Equal parts quest, physiology treatise, and running history. . . . [McDougall] seeks to learn the secrets of the Tarahumara the old-fashioned way: He tracks them down. . . . The climactic race reads like a sprint. . . . It simply makes you want to run.”–Outside Magazine

“Hugely entertaining. . . . One of the most joyful and engaging books about running to appear for many years.”— The Irish Times.

“An enthralling story. . . . McDougall’s background as a magazine writer is readily apparent–his prose is light and airy, informative without being pretentious. Most passages are short and engaging with extra doses of drama and exclamatory phrases thrown in to great effect. McDougall wisely grounds the narrative in his own struggle to engage in the concluding race–he was frustrated with his tendency to get injured–and he offers insightful sidebars on a variety of topics, from the development of the modern running shoe to an evolutionary argument that humans are literally born to run. . . . A terrific ride, recommended for any athlete.”–Kirkus, starred review

Fascinating book! I loved it!
By Lisa Dunckley
Born To Run is a fascinating book. As always, I love books where the author presents new information in an engaging fashion!! The interwoven themes include:

1) The history of Ultra-Marathons and the Ultra-Runners who compete in them. Ultra-Marathons are any races longer than a regular marathon (just over 26 miles). Most of them are 50km, 100km, 50 miles, or 100 miles (although they can be much longer). The marathoners themselves are...insane—I mean, incredible, athletes. There's Ann, for example, a short, slender, community college teacher, who was the female champion of the Western States 100 FOURTEEN TIMES, and during one fun four year stretch, she ran an ultramarathon every other month. Yet she seemed to get stronger and faster the more she ran. Why doesn't she get injuries?
2) The Tarahumara Indians from Mexico have this inexplicable ability to run hundreds of miles without becoming exhausted, and to do it constantly without any running injuries. Oh, and while barefoot or wearing homemade sandals, not fancy running shoes.
3) Why do all (normal) runners have such a huge percentage of running related injuries? Roughly 8 out of 10 runners are injured EVERY YEAR! Injuries are increasing, marathon times are not. What the heck are we doing??
4) The Leadville Trail 100, which is one of the scariest races imaginable. It's the highest altitude city in North America, and one of the coldest. So it's perfect for a 100 mile race. Especially when the starting line is twice as high as the altitude where airplanes pressurize their cabins, and it only goes up.
5) Are humans designed to run without shoes, and is all our technology and sophisticated gear making things worse? Is there biological and evolutionary evidence that we were originally engineered to run? Or is that completely wrong?

There are multiple ultra-marathoners and multiple (horrifying sounding) ultra races compared in here. The evolution stuff was especially interesting. The entire book was really fascinating—since I find running in general to be downright boring, if I find a book about running to be this entertaining, then the author did a great job!!

By Jeffrey S Baumann
To be honest I never thought that I would ever believe that I could read a book around the topic of running and enjoy it, but this has turned into one of my all time favorite books and changed the way I think about running.
Distance running is the fountain of youth (if done correctly), and this book both inspires you to run and gives you tips on how to run without hurting your body.

Fun and informative read
By Jeff Holland
If you can get past some of the over-dramatized hyperbole of this book, it's quite a fun and engaging read. I couldn't put it down. I'm interested in the science and history of running and the scam of so-called running shoes that have given me shin splints all my life until I started running barefoot. I do take the "truths" presented in this book, from the details of the stories themselves to the scientific findings to be somewhat biased. But it's a fun story, and there's definitely veracity in the book, but just keep in mind that some of the claims may be exaggerated.

Good first edition effort
By Carlos Rosado
First edition of the "current" has a couple of typos that are easy to catch if you use the textbook for review but may confuse some new readers. One incorrect entry in the treatment of atheroembolic disease. The interventional nephrology chapter could be dropped altogether. I used it to review for my nephrology re-certification and found it very useful. For residents and students a section on urine microscopy would be a welcomed addition. Looking forward to the new edition.

Good but mot as expected
By Marios Prikis
This nephrology book is very attractive and has a nice approach to a wide spectrum of kidney diseases. However, its disadvantages include lack of in deep pathophysiological explanations. I would generally recommend it for a quick review.

Almost complete
By Danilo Manno
Taking a look at another more complete text as "
Comprehensive Clinical Nephrology: 4e
by Jurgen Floge et al. (Hardcover)" but more expensive and too detalied, I can say that this text miss some fondamentals. Some one else has observed lack of chapters about anatomy and basic phisiology. I can add theese chapters I find hardstone for practice clinic: 1)urinary tract Infection 2) kidney stone disease 3)neoplasms of kidney and bladder 4) malformations and congenital obstructive syndrome due to malformations and acquired obstructive syndrome; 5)hereditary tubular disease 6) trauma, neurologic bladder and incontinance.
by expanding text don't think it will loose its usufulness ad manual text. I also hope authors will read our opinions and will manage in improving this text. Sorry for errors in texting. (I am italian)

Realista
By Pilar Lepe

2013 Reprint of 1957 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Joseph Penso de la Vega, best known as Joseph de la Vega (ca.1650-1692), was a successful Jewish merchant, poet, and philanthropist residing in 17th century Amsterdam. He became famous for his masterpiece "Confusion of Confusions" the oldest book ever written on the stock exchange business. Although not a descriptive account of the process of stock trading, Penso presented the history of speculation in stocks and acquainted the reader with the sophisticated financial instruments used. The dialogue format allowed the reader to understand the respective perspectives of the various market participants and the intricacies of speculation and trading. Penso also came up with four basic rules of the share market that are still of the greatest relevance today: The first rule in speculation is: Never advise anyone to buy or sell shares. Where guessing correctly is a form of witchcraft, counsel cannot be put on airs. The second rule: Accept both your profits and regrets. It is best to seize what comes to hand when it comes, and not expect that your good fortune and the favorable circumstances will last. The third rule: Profit in the share market is goblin treasure: at one moment, it is carbuncles, the next it is coal; one moment diamonds, and the next pebbles. Sometimes, they are the tears that Aurora leaves on the sweet morning's grass, at other times, they are just tears. The fourth rule: He who wishes to become rich from this game must have both money and patience. Includes Foreword by Hermann Kellenbenz.

Stocks Trades and their History
By Colin Myles
The first book written about the stock market and how it operates. The psychology behind the trades shows that the current operators haven't changed much since 1688. If you like business and the history about how an industry started this is the ideal book for you.

My favorite WPF book: stands the test of time!
By Andre M. Van Meulebrouck
I've read countless WPF books cover to cover.

This is my very favorite. I read it early when it first came out.

The code examples are awesome.

The fact that this book introduces the topic using lots of code only (no XAML) examples turned out to be more of a plus than I ever imagined. Here's why: Microsoft now has a functional programming (FP) language called F#. F# doesn't yet have any GUI designers for WPF. I had a choice: I could use a mixed language approach using C# projects to create XAML, and F# projects for "engine" type code. Or, I could do everything in pure code using F# alone. I opted for the latter, and I'm glad I did.

The code-centric background I got in WPF from this book prepared me well for this. I found that I could do things in pure code combined with FP techniques that I couldn't do using a XAML + code approach. For instance, when you create WPF widgets in code, you can see all kinds of other code elements through scope (without needing annotations within XAML, and other mechanisms). You can also leverage this (to some extent) in C# by using lambdas, since lambdas can see parental scope (thus obviating the need to pass parameters).

As a result of this, I find that I can be much more productive and succinct using a code only approach: it seems much easier, faster, and more natural to me.

When it comes to decoupling a GUI from "code behind" (a la the MVVM pattern), perhaps binding isn't the only way. Perhaps ADTs (abstract data structures) are another approach that can be leveraged (and FP languages offer greater abilities to create ADTs than conventional languages do).

In addition, I find that Charles really "gets it". He deeply understands the subject matter and can impart it to readers.

For these reasons this book is my favorite WPF book. It's also the most useful, the most helpful, and the most interesting WPF book in my tool chest.

Code formatting is bad, otherwise a good book
By Timothy Benner
I'm only on the first chapter, so I can't say much about the book yet, but I have noticed a problem with the formatting of the code examples. I have the Kindle version of the book, and I'm using a Kindle DX. In the first chapter, the code sample InheritTheApp does not fit all on one page. This is fine, except when I try and use the next button to see the rest of the listing. Instead of seeing the rest of the listing, I see the paragraph of text after the code sample! It is like the rest of the code listing was chopped off. Now if I shrink the font size, I can then see more of the listing though.
Has anyone else seen this problem? I also see the same thing on the PC reader as well. I've emailed the author, but have not heard back yet.

I've now gone through the first 3 chapters in the book, and I must say I do like Petzold's style of writing. I have another WPF book which goes into a lot of theory from the start. I'm a nuts and bolts kind of person, so having code examples first with explanations is the best way for me to learn. Once I'm comfortable with the technology, then I can go into the theory deeper. I think Petzold strikes a good balance.
There has been a lot of criticism about no pictures in the book. This doesn't really bother me, since Petzold has said he wants the reader to go through and try the examples. Why fill up excess pages with images you can see on your computer monitor if you run the program?
So overall a good book, but the bad code formatting problem on the kindle detracts from a fine book.

Excellent guide through the WPF thicket
By E. McElroy
When Petzold's original book "Programming Windows" was first published in the mid-80s, THE computer book of the time was "The C Programming Language" by Kernighan and Ritchie. The teaching model of that book was incremental learning through example, always making sure that the reader was not overwhelmed by excessive detail at any particular stage of the learning process. This was the model adopted by Petzold for "Programming Windows" and it was as successful for Windows as it was for popularizing the C language. It is the model that Petzold has continued to follow in subsequent books. I have found this approach, when used by talented writers, to be very effective at producing a good understanding of a complex programming topic. Petzold's book on WPF is no exception.

This is not a book one reads in the living room. Like "The C Programming Language" and Petzold's other books, this is an extended tutorial to be read while sitting at the computer. That's why there are no screen shots in the book: they're on your monitor because that's where you are when you're reading it, at least during the initial reading.

One need only look at the disagreement among reviewers of this book to realize that it's a very different book from the endless mediocre titles offered by computer book publishers. Readers with a long background in software are also likely to realize that the variance in ratings almost certainly occurs because readers approach it with different backgrounds and different expectations.

Any of Petzold's books takes time to go through. That's simply a requirement of a book which teaches by incremental learning through example. Petzold is a very good writer and his explanations are clear, but demonstrating fine distinctions frequently means a topic must be developed at length. My opinion is that most people will take months to fully absorb this book and, therefore, this is not the book you want if your boss just gave you a WPF project and wants to see something on the monitor by the end of next week. There are other books that can help you do that much more quickly but those books, at least the ones I've looked at, will not bring you to the level of expertise that this one will.

This book will not be suitable for someone whose background consists of applications whose interface can be constructed by dropping controls on forms - a Petzold book is not intended for that kind of audience. For those who need to learn something quickly about WPF, Adam Nathan's book is quick reading: I went through a third of it in a couple of weeks before switching to Petzold's book. Although I haven't looked at them, someone under severe time pressure might want to check the instruction videos on Microsoft's web site to see if they can be useful.

The bottom line, for me, is this: WPF is a complex subject with a lot of detail and with architectural concepts very different from traditional GUI frameworks. It can easily overwhelm someone trying to learn it, even someone with decades of experience. It takes an enormous amount of intelligence to be able to take such a subject and break it down into incremental steps to make it understandable the way Petzold has done here. If you need a deep understanding of WPF and you are willing to spend the time that this book requires, this is the one you should get.
