Simone Weil's Le�ons de Philosophie are derived from a course she taught at the lyc�e for girls at Roanne in 1933-4. Anne Reynaud-Gu�rithault was a pupil in the class; her notes are not a verbatim record but are a very full and, as far as one can judge, faithful rendering, often catching the unmistakable tone of Simone Weil's voice as well as the force and the directness of her thought. The lectures form a good general introduction to philosophy, ranging widely over problems about perception, mind, language, reasoning and problems in moral and political philosophy too. Her method of presentation is a characteristic combination of abstract argument, personal experience and literary or historical reference. Peter Winch points out in his introduction to the book some of the more systematic connections in her philosophical work (and between this philosophical work and her other concerns), and makes a number of suggestive comparisons between Simone Weil and Wittgenstein. The translation is by Hugh Price from the Plon edition of 1959. Dr Price has added some notes to explain references in the text that might be unfamiliar to English speaking students beginning philosophy.

Though it was a little awkward at first to get Weil's thoughts secondhand, the cumulative effect was impressive. I have a degree in philosophy, and I would have paid almost anything to have a lecturer like her! An illuminating insight into a great mind.

A VISION WORTH SEEING

I found THE VISION THING a startling, bold, and creative feast in which the contributors address culturally hot topics such as political leadership, law, gender, race, pure evil, the world wide web, and Aboriginal alcoholism from a perspective steeped in the shared collective nature of our minds. Reading these pieces is not only to engage pleasurably with passionate and generous thinkers on their chosen topics, it is to become tantalized and educated about a way of appreciating ourselves as human beings in political activities. That way requires awareness of the mythic and archetypal themes braided into our conscious involvements with cultural issues.
A sure sign of the power contained in this way of analysis, and of the contributors' skills in presenting it, is that THE VISION THING stirred my emotions as well as my thoughts. One piece made me dizzy; another left me sickened; I marvelled at one and despaired at another - rare reactions to a book so chock full of first class thinking. I read most articles with an excitement appropriate to mystery stories, eager to know the outcome as I was led on by the author's own sense of adventure. Gr 7 Up-These attractive volumes are readable and well organized. They have comprehensive introductions and conclude with current practices and a look to the future. Zoroastrianism discusses the religion's history, scripture, philosophy, ethics, and rituals. African Religion covers the oral tradition, beliefs about God and the spirit world, rites, sacred places, and mystical forces. Both books have glossaries (but no pronunciation guides), minimal chapter notes, and lists for further reading. Unfortunately, they also have internal inconsistencies and are occasionally confusing. The abbreviations B.C.E. and C.E. are used with no explanation of their meaning. Both titles suffer from inadequate maps. And, while they cover the "big picture" well, there is little sense of how the religions are practiced on a daily basis. However, since little is available for teens on Zoroastrianism and traditional African religions, these may be useful purchases where world religions are of interest.-Ann W. Very Bad Book

I found this book very confusing at times. And there was certain important information that was completely left out. Especially with regards to the dates of when certain books were written, the sentences would seem to contradict each other. I did not enjoy this book and feel that all the information I wanted to know was left out. I know that it is difficult to date Zoroastrian writings but they hardly mentioned anything about the dating at all!

This book is a great introduction about this anciemt Iranian religion and its principles and rituals. Book is accompanied with many pictures.

I Expected Better From Facts On File

There is not a thing wrong with the text of this book. It is well written and informative. The problem is that this book claims to be an updated edition. We've been able to find no changes from the prior edition. In my opinion, this is tantamount to defrauding schools and libraries with limited budgets, not to mention the folks who work hard to pay the taxes. Buy the version that's not updated. You'll get the same product probably for a better price and let Facts On File know that such conduct is not appreciated.

Inspirational

Great book to keep in your purse or briefcase for those times when you need a reminder about how life works. Dr. Murphy's book The Power of the Subconscious Mind is still his best work though. This book contains many of the same ideas.

USING THE FORCE

This book was clearly designed to reveal in a simple, down-to-earth manner and in everyday language how to lead a fuller, richer and more glorious life. The techniques and programs discussed enable one to use the mental and spritual laws based on right thinking. Chapters deal with inter alia, guidance, problem-solving, healing, success, faith, conquering obstacles, overcoming worry and how to be serene in a changing world. Many affirmations and meditations are provided, and there's a helpful summary of the main points at the end of each chapter. Dr Murphy is one of my favourite authors and this book is full of practical wisdom and inspiration. I would also like to recommend his great classic The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind to everybody - it is a very powerful work that has improved the lives of so many people.
