About the Author
Samuel Adler is Professor Emeritus at the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. He has been a visiting professor at many schools throughout the country and abroad, giving master classes in composition, orchestration, and conducting. Adler's compositions have been performed worldwide by orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony. His works have been recorded on numerous labels, including Naxos, Albany, RCA, Crystal, New World, and PARMA.

The Study of orchestration CD's Video software don't run in OS X El Capitan

Great book and great audio examples, but the video software is not updated. It don't run in OS X El Capitan. Unfortunately there isn't information about what to do.

Problems with CD payback

The book and CD set make a formidable combination and a great study guide, but I have had difficulties playing the CDs. The only direct way to list and select the 532 audio tracks on a PC is to open Microsoft Media Player and insert the appropriate disc. Going via disc 6 is enough to start hating the climactic finish to the Great Gate of Kiev from sheer repetition!
My difficulty is in playing the movies, which appear to be .DXR files. Can any fellow-sufferer help me here? They simply won't run for me. All that runs is the Musorgsky/Ravel under Quick-Time.

AN INDISPENSIBLE ORCHESTRATION TEXT

An essential reference tool for the Composer and Orchestrator - I've read it cover to cover, and dipped into it for information almost every week. This orchestration text works exceptionally well with the accompanying set of 5 CD's and Workbook. This is the more expensive package, but it will literally last a lifetime. With the CDs, you gain an aural idea of the sound or orchestral phenomenon that the musical examples and wording is trying to explain. For the young composer, this is a wonderful thing, as it builds up a collection of sounds in the imagination with which to compose, like a palette with which to paint. The Study Of Orchestration has up-to-date orchestral technique, including comprehensive natural harmonics charts for strings, a contemporary notation guide; giving possible notation for microtones, distortion, white noise, and 'highest point on a string'-noteheads, etc.
Most of the instrumentation examples and orchestral extracts have a corresponding CD track, an immediate education for your musical ear. The 5 CDs make this book unique. I especially value this book for its Natural Harmonics charts which give the required string, node and resultant pitch for Violin, Viola, Violoncello and Double Bass. I consult these charts all the time.
Buy this book, (and the CD's if you can afford them).
