About the Author
Entrepreneur-investor Michael L. F. Slavin is president of U.S. Emerald Energy, an oil and gas exploration company. While his current ventures have brought him personal and financial success, that wasn't always the case.
The seven years prior to founding U.S. Emerald in 1992 were Mike's "in-between" years: in-between jobs, in-between businesses, in-between homes, in-between broke and just over broke. During this time, he held various positions as a headhunter, an insurance salesman, a self-employed mergers and acquisitions consultant, and the CEO of a title company.�Before going into the private sector, Mike served for ten years in the U.S. Army, first as an infantry officer and then as an aviation officer. He commanded two aviation units, served as an aide to the President of the United States during a state visit, and flew scouting missions over the Korean DMZ. Today, Mike is passionate about giving back to his community and creating and sharing resources that help entrepreneurs succeed. He serves on the board of the charity Justice for Children and writes and speaks about entrepreneurship to a variety of audiences.�Mike was raised by his grandparents in St. Joseph, Missouri. They taught him about hard work, thrift, sacrifice, and love. He achieved his childhood dream of entering West Point, graduating with an engineering degree in 1975. He later earned a master's in management from Troy State University. Mike lives in Houston with Won, his wife of over thirty years.

There are a couple main points you can take away from this book. 1. If you want to get to $1,000,000 in the bank you need to step outside your comfort zone - step out side your 9 to 5 job thinking. You need to take account of your deeply ingrained bias's. You need to understan that the best shot of putting $1,000,000 in your bank is to own a business. 2. Is to shoot for the stars. Set a goal for $1,000,000. Its easier to clear the trees if you are shooting for the stars. Reminds of another successful entrepreneur, Gary Vaynerchuk - his big goal was to own the NY Jets - big goals like that helped him build wine business from $3M to a $60M business in just five years.
These 2 main points are something, I think are the crux of success. Having the courage, initiative and desire to want to change your lot in life. And...big fat goals. $1,000,000 in your bank pushes you to focus on big goals, big plans - like how many customers do I need to sell to or service to get $1,000,000 in the bank...and then you work backward from there.
The chapter on bias's is new. I cannot recall any other entrepreneur mentioning these- ever. I have read 100s of these books. This chapter pinpoints why most people do not start a business, do not see opportunities and do not succeed, I for one am guilty of all of them or at least half on the list. Worth reading over and over again - and exploring them with someone that can help you overcome them.
There are many chapters in this book that will help you along the way. What type of business to start, ones to avoid, where to find money to help you buy the business, where to get help running the business. All of these sources are available you just need to seek them out.
There are some huge risks in starting a business, but the reward is there. What really happens to you as a person is the greatest benefit. What you learn, what becomes important to others. Who you become...and the end is the story you share to help guide others - I think Michael gets an "A" here.

If you are looking for a “get rich quick” book, One Million in the Bank is not for you. You would inevitably start paging through the book looking for “quick tips” to making your fortunate.
The book’s author, Mike Slavin, comes off as a good friend who wants to share his success with you. And when you consider that he made most of his net worth prior to writing this book, he is just that: someone who wants to help people like you and me who want a chance to make the dream come true.
This book not only deals with the basics of finding the right business for you; how to get funding; and the long term skills needed to make it work, but also insight into subjects such as will power; changing habits and cognitive biases (I know it sounds complex, but I found it fascinating). In other words, the book covers all the bases.
Will this book guarantee you will ultimately put A Million in the Bank? Of course not, but if you want a fighting chance, read this book and give it your best shot. With Mike Slavin as your partner, the odds are on your side.

Wasted my money. It may not be a waste of yours.

Not really a great book. Let me explain. It has the same old advice all the dozen of other financial books have. Don't quit your job. The internet is a tool . Don't focus on the product focus on the solution. I rated the way I did because there are some unique things like the MLM bit and why buying a franchise is bad. But you won't be getting any help with generating a business idea from this book. Which was what I'm looking for. It's great if you have a business idea. Gives you resources on where to find money and investors. But if you don't even have and idea this is NOT the book to buy.
