About the Author
Dumitru Sandru is an artist, composer, and author. He paints in the classical, surreal, and modern styles, and most of the music Dumitru composes is of the New Age flavor. As an author, he prefers to write science fiction, paranormal, and young adult fantasy novels, such as Arboregal, The Lorn Tree. Escape from Communism is his story of escaping from communist Romania when he was eighteen. Dumitru resides in California with his wife. They have one daughter and two grandsons.

An excellent and compelling account !

I highly recommend this compelling book. There are no esoteric academic theories - just the real experiences and observations of a seasoned citizen of the world about his experiences on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
Dumitru is a co-worker and also a good friend of 15 years. He has been telling me bits and pieces of the story of how he and a friend escaped from communist Romania when he was just 17 years old. He has now published this fascinating five-star story of his death-defying adventure.
I had heard there were millions of people my age listening to rock and roll music in the 60's and 70's behind the Iron Curtain. When I was listening to the Beatles, Stones and others at that time I would often think about that and wonder if anyone there was listening at the same time. Low and behold, when Dumitru and I met and started talking, it was like we were long lost brothers. He told the opposite story of mine about how he listened to Western rock and roll wondering about the freedoms of Western democratic countries.
This book is written in three related sections. The first is of his life in Romania growing up under communist rule and the full diary of his riveting escape. This leads to the second part which is his compelling insights as a pragmatist who has experienced first hand why communism and totalitarianism will always be doomed to fail (it is contrary to basic human nature and the inherent rights of mankind, which has been an underlying concept supporting the theory of democracy starting with the ancient Greeks, which Mike verifies). And lastly, with the experiences of communism burned into his memory and his forty some years of life in the freedoms of Western democracy, he provides startling insights into what he sees going on in the United States, and no doubt all free democracies of the West, and offers his view of where he feels we are going as a nation.

No esoteric academic theories here, just credible first-hand perspective.

Let me start out saying that I really enjoyed this book, particularly finding the personal accounts of life under the oppression of communism, and the details of a daring and harrowing escape quite compelling.
It is, in fact, almost two books, with the first being a very personal autobiographical account of the author's experiences, first under the stifling oppression of 1970's Romanian communism, and then of his bold and daring escape and ultimate migration to a life of relative freedom in the USA. The second part of this book, is more a philosophical assessment of the contrasts between communism and capitalism and the relative free-enterprise of the USA, with additional commentary as to the state and future of freedom in America. I have to say..., I think Mr. Sandru sums things up pretty well with his assessment of where we appear to be headed.
While I found much to agree with, and I appreciate Mr. Sandru sounding alarm in a very accessible read to the risk of giving away our precious blessing of liberty, as a student of the classical-liberal literature of liberty, I found the philosophical discussion to be essentially a layman presentation of the author's personal views, and not entirely theoretically accurate (as another reviewer noted, "There are no esoteric academic theories" here).
For conservative readers of casual interest, the basic philosophic notions presented here, I think will be relatively easy to accept. For the more serious reader interested in deeper intellectual discourse ("esoteric academic theories") on these subjects, I highly recommend the writings of Mises, Hayek, Nock and Rothbard.
On a technical note, as I read the Kindle version, it doesn't appear to include any indexing, leaving only a one-page-at-a-time navigation. I noticed that I was unable to navigate using the table-of-contents or section paging. The e-book would benefit with chapter / section indexing that would allow the reader to readily jump around to sections of special interest or for review. Also, none of the illustrations displayed well on my Kindle.
All that said..., I can heartily recommend this book. I found it to be informative, entertaining and thought provoking. What more do you want?

I applaud Mr. Sandru for his courage to think and act independently when Romanian's communist government and its enforced societal norms threatened the few remaining freedoms he had, including his life. �It is with that same conviction that he provides a very real warning to Americans to wake up and not be lulled into complacency as our country continues down a slippery slope toward a government-controlled society. �Mr. Sandru has the ability to translate the complex �into simple one simple truth ... �liberty is the most valuable asset any individual has, hold on to it with your life!
