I was disappointed in this
By Brent Butler
When I consider using a book like this, I want to see step by step instructions on how to do commonly desired tasks. What I found instead is more of an AWS dictionary with some advice mixed in here and there.

For example, do you want to set up a network where some or all of your AWS server instances can interact with each other? There's a great looking chapter title in the book. It talks about it for a few pages. Does it anywhere show where to start and what to do in order to accomplish this?

No.

That's what I was looking for.

I found very little in this book that isn't just regurgitated from the AWS documentation and marketing materials. Instead, it needs to be hands on.

By the way, the AWS documentation doesn't do much of a job of teaching you how to use AWS either, but that's another story that a review of this book isn't really the place for. Suffice it to say that if you have just created some servers in AWS, this book isn't going to get you very far in terms of nuts and bolts.

It will explain what most of the possibilities are, and that's helpful enough to get it a second star.

Good reference for newbies in AWS
By Israel Romero Rojas
I had no previous experience with AWS and the information available on amazon was not easy to follow for me since I didn't had any reference of the different components and their functions and I couldn't find a reference inside AWS documentation that would exemplefy this in general.

This book helped me to understand the big picture of the services available in AWS and the implication of configuration options of the most commonly used services. I'm sure it will be useful as a reference for a little while, which is basically the function of this type of "basic" guides.

A must-read for small businesses
By Personne
After many years in the world of corporate engineering, I started up my own company and began selling software on the web a year or so ago. As anyone in a similar situation knows, there's a lot to learn when you take that approach. Although there are many basic solutions to putting together a web store, your needs will grow as your business grows. Whether it's your website, offline storage, order fulfillment or product downloads, there's a constant learning process that's absolutely critical to maintaining your business. I've reached the point where the basic techniques that got me off the ground are becoming inadequate.

Enter Amazon Web Services, a powerful and scaleable approach to getting things done. It's easy enough to hit the website, start an account and do a few basic things. But if you're anything like me, there's often no substitute for sitting down with a book and a highlighter to get a basic overview. This 'Dummies' book is an excellent first step. It's readable and informative (if not well proof-read), laying out basic principles and then describing each service in turn. Of course it doesn't go into full depth--that would require thousands of pages that would need to change as rapidly as the service itself--but it's enough to give you the picture of what you need and how you can get started. It also gave me ideas about new things I could do in the future.

There are many reasons to be cautious about cloud services, and the author addresses those honestly and carefully. There is (and really always has been) the need for good security practices within your company walls. But this book makes the demarcation between you and Amazon clear and understandable, building confidence in the way you can approach security practices.

For those who've labored within large company walls (and my former company was in the Fortune 500), you know how maddening IT departments can be. You may need an engineering solution NOW, but IT manages to turn that simple request into weeks of forms, approvals and obfuscation. With a bit of luck, those IT 'professionals' will be soon looking for other work. If you're up to it and willing to enter a process of constant self-education, you can get what you need in hours or minutes instead of weeks. This book is a good down-payment on that process.
