About the Author
Samuel Adler is Professor Emeritus at the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. He has been a visiting professor at many schools throughout the country and abroad, giving master classes in composition, orchestration, and conducting. Adler's compositions have been performed worldwide by orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony. His works have been recorded on numerous labels, including Naxos, Albany, RCA, Crystal, New World, and PARMA.

The Study of orchestration CD's Video software don't run in OS X El Capitan

Great book and great audio examples, but the video software is not updated. It don't run in OS X El Capitan. Unfortunately there isn't information about what to do.

Problems with CD payback

The book and CD set make a formidable combination and a great study guide, but I have had difficulties playing the CDs. The only direct way to list and select the 532 audio tracks on a PC is to open Microsoft Media Player and insert the appropriate disc. Going via disc 6 is enough to start hating the climactic finish to the Great Gate of Kiev from sheer repetition!

My difficulty is in playing the movies, which appear to be .DXR files. Can any fellow-sufferer help me here? They simply won't run for me. All that runs is the Musorgsky/Ravel under Quick-Time.

AN INDISPENSIBLE ORCHESTRATION TEXT

An essential reference tool for the Composer and Orchestrator - I've read it cover to cover, and dipped into it for information almost every week. This orchestration text works exceptionally well with the accompanying set of 5 CD's and Workbook. This is the more expensive package, but it will literally last a lifetime. With the CDs, you gain an aural idea of the sound or orchestral phenomenon that the musical examples and wording is trying to explain. For the young composer, this is a wonderful thing, as it builds up a collection of sounds in the imagination with which to compose, like a palette with which to paint. The Study Of Orchestration has up-to-date orchestral technique, including comprehensive natural harmonics charts for strings, a contemporary notation guide; giving possible notation for microtones, distortion, white noise, and 'highest point on a string'-noteheads, etc.

Most of the instrumentation examples and orchestral extracts have a corresponding CD track, an immediate education for your musical ear. The 5 CDs make this book unique. I especially value this book for its Natural Harmonics charts which give the required string, node and resultant pitch for Violin, Viola, Violoncello and Double Bass. I consult these charts all the time.

Drawing on diaries, reports, and published works and a scrutiny of the guiding principles for their collecting of objects, she demonstrates how these explorers portrayed the cultures encountered. They lived with Kyrgyz nomads who carved out an existence for themselves above the tree line with their sheep, goats, and yaks. Traveling along the river Pandsh, they were the first Europeans to collect ethnographical information on the transhumant pastoralists in the elevated valleys bordering Afghanistan. On the steppes of the western lowlands, the Danish expeditions stopped in Samarkand, Khiva, and Bukhara, commercial hubs on the old Silk Road. As official guests of both the emir of Bukhara and the khan of Khiva, they studied the handicrafts of the bazaars and the irrigation agriculture practiced by the Tajiks and Uzbeks. On visits to Merv they also spent time with Turkmen nomadic tribes who had only recently been fighting the Russian colonial power.

Like I'm reading them

An interesting subject, and the first time I've ever read a book on the topic. This book teaches you how to see auras. It's not an overnight process, as the book says, but something that will take regular training on your part. Now after having read this, I find myself analyzing people, mostly while standing in lines, sitting in coffee shops, or riding the the train to and home from work. Though, it's difficult to hold focus in those settings, and I've yet to see actual colors, I feel that I'm feeling some energy surrounding these people. Like I'm reading them. Perhaps I was just oblivious to my surrounding before, which I believe is safe to say, but there's something to this. I'll keep trying. This could be life changing.

Find out a person's aura

Am not a person with a developed sixth sense or that kind of sensitivity to detect anything beyond natural, but I have thoroughly enjoyed​ reading through this book about auras. It explained clearly how to observe auras and how helpful it can be to understand the other person's state of being. Though it requires a lot of practice and patience to master reading auras, it is relatively easy to learn and anyone can do it. The chapter on how to cleanse your aura was of particular interest to me and I appreciate the insights on how to strengthen your aura. It was really helpful.

Patience is key to master auras

In this book you’ll find very basic concepts like the definition and colors of auras and you’ll also understand some advanced techniques so perceive and develop your aura. Sincerely I enjoyed this book, it’s full of really interesting information and lots of activities and tips to understand and developed from the most basic concept about auras to the most abstract one, all by yourself. Recommended reading to psychic enthusiasts.

Musician and producer Cash spends the first half of his book reviewing his mom's early days performing with the legendary Carter Family in 1939, and her later marriage to Johnny Cash. This story has been notably told before in June's two autobiographies and Mark Zwonitzer's definitive Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?, which Cash dutifully cites, while adding some fascinating stories, such as a possible more-than-flirtation with the young Elvis Presley and various aspects of Johnny and June's courtship that he feels the film Walk the Line lacked. But the book really begins to soar in its second half. Cash unflinchingly details the addictions that beset himself and many of his sisters—as well as June and Johnny's addictions late in their lives—while lovingly showing how throughout this time, and until her death in 2003, June's unshakable religious faith infused her life and helped inspire her children to continue the legacy of her family's music and its strong work ethic. He lives with his wife, Laura, and three children, Joseph, Anna Maybelle, and Jack Ezra, in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

Inspirational...

What a loving portrayal of a son for his parents. I remember June Carter from my youth...as a southern youngster my parents were huge fans of the grand old opry. On most Saturday nights, that was our entertainment. A night of country music!
I enjoyed this book tremendously. Most people don't ever have this kind of love and it's nice to read about. They persevered and led life to the fullest while becoming great legends in the field of music.

Very Well Written

Anchored In Love was a wonderful book. I think John Carter Cash did a wonderful job writing it.The book is about his mother June but about all his family really.
John Carter wrote about his Carter grandparents and the Carter family ,which I enjoyed very much. Not much was said about John Carter's other grand parents Carrie and Ray Cash who lived right by John Carter growning up also. I did wonder about that.
I would love to see John Carter write a book about Grandma Maybelle Carter.Thanks John Carter Cash for a wonderful insight in to your family ,I enjoyed it alot.

A Must Read...........

This book gives us a very detailed look into the private lives of both Johnny and June Carter Cash told in a way that only someone who was really there could tell it. There isn't any sugar-coating---John Carter gives us a very frank and honest account of what life was like behind closed doors at the Cash household. Nothing really earth-shattering revealed--if anything, a more "human" light is cast upon the "legends" which just made me love them even more.

The only thing not covered in this book is what kind of relationship all the "children" had with each other. Johnny had four daughters from his first marriage; June had two daughters from her first two marriages, and then they had John-Carter together. Although all of the children are at least mentioned in most books, none really elaborate on what kind of relationships they shared. Now that would be an interesting book, I'm sure. Maybe one or more of the children will address that subject someday.

Overall, it is a very interesting and informative book which I really enjoyed. It's truly a must-have for any real Carter/Cash fan.

Great for new teachers!

This is a terrific book dealing with all of the various forms of communication that is so critical to teaching. It discusses various types of communication styles that is common in a school and how to effectively navigate through the challenges that arise for each. Examples are the authoritarian principal, the charming coworker that manipulates others into doing his job, overbearing parents, the control freak of a coworker, etc. It will walk you through how to deal with parents, students, coworkers, support staff, etc and I found it to be very authentic. As I read through this I found myself identifying attributes of my parents and coworkers and the advice was dead on when working with them. Typical challenge areas for new teachers are how to deal with an irate parent, when and why to seek help from an administrator, the importance of identifying teachers that are mutually respected by both other teachers and colleagues and seeking advice, identifying and respecting the communication chain of command, and personal pitfalls to avoid. Time and time again I witness coworkers and parents struggle with communication in our environment due to the passion that surrounds what we do each day. I will absolutely give a copy of this to my new colleagues and take the time to discuss the various aspects covered in the book. It also helped to rejuvenate my personal commitment to have a positive communication style and it was great to just take a little bit of time to pause and contemplate everything covered. The book is also very easy and quick to read so find a copy and pass it around!

About the Author

Amanda Howard has worked as an English language teacher, teacher educator, lecturer and coordinator for institutions and universities both in the Middle East and the UK and has extensive experience with both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She researches and writes in the areas of teacher evaluation, observation and feedback in educational settings, language teaching pedagogy and Young Learner education.

Helen Donaghue is a Senior Lecturer in English Language Teaching at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. She has worked in TESOL and teacher education in Hungary, the United Arab Emirates and the UK. Her teaching interests include EAP, teaching L2 reading and language testing and her research interests focus mainly on institutional interaction in educational settings. She is currently researching the co-construction and negotiation of face and identity in post observation feedback meetings.
